Accidents and fault are not mutually exclusive concepts. There's the whole idea of negligence. This event is the very reason why some people oppose offshore drilling in the first place. Especially when we're pushing the limits to exploit a well like this one. I can't even conceive of what the long term effects of this will be, but it's going to dwarf Valdez by several magnitudes. How the hell do you clean oil out of marshlands? Louisiana is still trying to fully recover from Katrina, and this is going to destroy their economy. On top of that, anything that gets shipped along the Mississippi is going to skyrocket in price. Shrimp already went up 2$, and that's on the wholesale end. All this, and we're still in the 'figuring out what the hell to do about it' phase. The actual solution could take months to years to execute, with this well pumping out 200,000 gallons a day in the meantime.

Dunked until soggy. There's a point where the cookie starts to loose it's ability to sustain itself... you want to pull out just before this point. Nothing worse than loosing half a cookie in a mug of milk, although it's fun to find it again when you drink it at the end of the session. Oreo dunking is an art, and it's one of the few treats from my childhood that still makes me very, very happy.

No, tiki. I wasn't talking about any of that. The work he's done regarding the bomb detection unit is admirable, and there are obviously some folks who he shouldn't test due to safety issues. Sorry, tiki, but the million dollar challenge is bullshit. Penn & Teller could do a show on it, that's how bullshit it is. The qualifications needed to even apply for it are bullshit, the money you need to pay out of pocket to apply is bullshit, and the restrictions and conditions he puts on it are bullshit. Aside from that, the JREF (James Randi Educational Foundation) Forums are bullshit, too. Nothing but a place for pseudo-intellectuals and wanna-be scientists to pretend they know more than anyone else. All anyone does there is wait for someone to show up with a question about something unusual and then they all stand around and verbally stone them while patting each other on the back. My favorite is when they accuse someone of using anecdote as evidence, and then in the next thread use an anecdote to tell someone how wrong they are. Professional skeptics are dangerously proud & closed minded at times.
