I don't recall anyone getting all riled up about Atheists calling themselves "married". The pretty much belies the "marriage is about religion" argument and reveals what this is really about.

@nyokki: JFK used to say that Buchanan was worst, until JFK spent some time in the Oval Office. After that, he said he refused to pass judgment. He said that no one else can ever know what it's like to be behind that desk, to have the view of the field the president has, not even other presidents. He decided that it was impossible to judge. I doubt he meant that universally, though. If a president rounded up people and exterminated them a la the Holocaust, it's probably a safe bet to judge them for it. But JFK was unwilling to condemn Buchanan for the Civil War, and I find that meaningful.

@conan776: Saying '67 was mostly fought over water issues is like saying the Warsaw Ghetto uprising was mostly over insecticide issues. The only reason water was an issue is because the Syrians didn't want Israel to have any, not because they were in any particular need of more.

Israeli loss of land: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Early-Historical-Israel-Dan-Beersheba-Judea.png But that's not arbitrary and convenient to a pro-Palestinian point of view. My bad.

@AlecDalek: The US let Israel have nukes in the same way it let North Korea have nukes. In other words: not. The Israeli nuclear reactor at Dimona was built by the French at the same time the US threatened sanctions on them (and the UK and France) for having attacked Egypt. The US also refused to sell them more weapons in the 60s without inspections at Dimona. (Ever wonder why the '67 war was fought by the Israelis with British tanks and French aircraft?)

I can all but guarantee that it's illegal in Oman and Yemen.

@dieAntagonista The Russians didn't want to eradicate an entire race? Let's ask some Ukrainians and Prussians (if you can even find the latter) about that. They were more patient than the Nazis were, but starving the Ukraine (for example) was hardly NOT attempting genocide.
  • Comment on Resistance 2 for the PS3 (2008-12-12 15:30:11)
I agree with teezy. 1 was pretty formulaic. The story wasn't particularly outstanding, just kinda Quake set in WWII. The weapons were kinda cool, but not terribly clever. (I do love how they handled the sniper rifle.) I'm not going to be impressed with a game until the terrain is destructible and/or every building is accessible. With no lag.
  • Comment on Akira (2008-12-01 12:48:18)
Actually, even the DVD release sucks. They always insist on re-dubbing it, and inevitably they re-dub it with what their idea of the target audience is: 12 year-old American boys. As a result, it's dumbed down compared to the old VHS version I have. I hate it. And I'd give odds to anyone who wants to bet that Hollywood won't screw it up worse. I suppose we should be thankful Verhoeven isn't directing, or we'd end up with an abomination worse than Starship Troopers.
  • Comment on The Messenger (2008-12-01 12:37:02)
It was a good movie. I especially liked the interactions with Dustin Hoffman. Although Luc Besson is misleading at the end. Joan of Arc's trial was reversed by the church 24 years later. (You won't find me defending the church often.)

If AI says the US tortures, people sing their praises. If AI says China tortures, it's called propaganda. Governments are like evil people: some are more evil than others. Why do people have a need to create moral equivalency? So that they can feel like fighting the US government (which is easy) is every bit as important and praiseworthy as fighting China's?

I'm not a doctor, but my rates are very reasonable.
