The books were good for pop fiction, or at least better than a lot I've read recently. The TV series has diverged from the books a bit, mostly because they're trying to translate and condense the books, and some of it is sorta hard to bring to the small screen. I think they're doing an ok job of it. At least it's not Laurell K Hamilton or Twilight bullshit.

I definitely agree with the "good film" opinions, and I would also like to note that they provided actual reasons when they shifted into English to cut down on the sub-titling.
