Because the character that he generally plays is a socially inept super-wuss who somehow still manages to get the girl and learn some sort of life-changing lesson. This is not typically how it works in the real world, and it can also be difficult to dissociate the actor from the character(s) when it's the only role the actor ever plays.

Realized the acronyms could be a little obscure after I posted the above. LCE = vest with all the loops and hooks to attach ammo packs, etc. MRE = meal, ready to eat. Tan plastic bag. NVG = night vision goggles. AT-4 = fairly close range anti-tank "missile"

I think he's got the weapon propped on his backpack. He's got a couple of small packs on his LCE, I don't know what's in the one on his right side or his butt pack. On his right, there is a MRE, Kevlar helmet, goggles (in the black), what looks to be a NVG mount, and I don't know what is in the right-most pack. On his left side he has a anti-tank weapon and binos. Minus the anti-tank weapon, that's pretty standard load. Stuff like the AT-4 gets distributed among the squad, on a rotational basis unless you have a noob, so it may just be his time to carry it.
