One of these helicopters (A Eurocopter Dauphin) has been running back and forth infront of my office building all day along the Potomac river because Fairfax County, in VA, lost one of their guys down river a ways during a training exercise. No word yet on whether he's still alive, but it's got several surrounding counties involved, plus the FBI and USCG kicking in aerial resources to try and locate the missing officer.

That's the problem - we did waste 30 years doing nothing but messing around in LEO. The public got "bored" of the moon missions because we "beat" the Soviets. NASA lacked a vision after that, so they just sort of meandered about until someone cooked up the ISS project, which kind of gave us something to do. We learned a metric ton of knowledge, mind you, but, yeah, we should;ve already had a permanent outpost on the moon by now. I just hope Obama, if he wins, doesn't axe the space program for his education policy, because that money can come from somewhere else quite easily.

Looks like the Soviet space shuttle, the Buran. All white, mounted on an Energia booster/tank. Their version of the shuttle lacked main engines, and instead only had orbital maneuvering thrusters. Plus there's the four strap-on, liquid fuel booster rockets (NASA's shuttle is solid fuel). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buran_(spacecraft)
