My concern is we are moving towards actual laws against insulting religion. And if that happens you might as well say goodbye to free speech totally.

Oh yes, the more you try to ban speech the more if flowers, but that so far that has really only applied to the calls for free speech restrictions. No one, in the USA anyway, has passed laws restricting free speech against religion. Or kowtowed to foreign laws doing so. My question, though was I assume you are at least a little concerned that our current government, and indeed many of those who usually champion free speech, seem to be placing Islam in a special category. And since the only way that really sells is to ban all trash talk against religion - or at least religious figures - it seems to me that this would be of some concern to atheists as a group. Understand, korinthian, that even though you and I disagree on, well, pretty much everything, I respect your free speech rights and I want no one's restricted.

Sort of out of the blue I suppose, but I wonder what the atheists here think of the whole free speech argument over the Islam-insulting film that allegedly, but actually did not, set off the embassy attacks overseas. The head of the UN said that he believed in free speech except in causing hurt and insult to others, and the LA Times, and several high-profile folks in entertainment and politics have said the film-maker needs to be punished for insulting Islam - well, inflaming things anyway, making the "crying fire in a theater" argument. There are even calls for international laws against insulting religious figures, including Mohammad, Buddha and Jesus. So in light of that, where do you guys stand? I mean you're never gonna see Christians attacking embassies or calling for the arrest of atheists when they "attack" Jesus or Christianity. Sure they moan and groan and get a prayer circle going for you which I know is annoying, but past that you can be pretty sure you are safe. But what if they start passing laws that say you can't post things that attack religion? Any religion including the horror that is Christianity. What WILL you guys do for fun on the internet then? Or seriously, what will you do about it at all? And before you say, bullshit, it will never happen, I strongly suggest you rethink that. Once they started calling things "hate crimes" they opened a big damn door because any thought can be described by someone else as hateful and therefore any statement can as well. I'll end by saying I assume you guys are a tad concerned about this trend. I know I am because no matter how offensive the speech one should have the right for the government not to restrict it.

Actually, you really can't silence the opposition by throwing out racist any longer. It doesn't have the heft it once had because the vast majority of the country knows that, while racism still exists, America is one of the least racists nations on Earth. Add in the fact that certain people predictably cry-wolf about it over and over and over and you have fewer and fewer people buying it. I call that progress.

Hmmm, I suppose they can. What I meant was, and you probably knew this, that some things are accepted by ALL people as being racist. Using historically derogatory words for specific races being one of them. However, it seems today if you dare to challenge a person's policies or actions and they happen to be a minority - and not even a racial minority - it's racist to those on the left. Take welfare reform for example. To call for it is labeled racist by the left despite more white people being on welfare than black. Don't like Obamacare? Racist! Don't believe the president has done a good job? Racist! It's the whole "dog-whistle" thing. People looking for racism in every single action and word are always going to find it whether it exists or not. They hear the dog-whistle when most people do not. So, no, what's obvious to rotatebilly up above is not obvious to the majority of people.

Obvious? What's an obvious racial attack? Past the obvious I mean like using the "N-word," or other blatant racial attack. Examples, please.

Yeah, I know, but that doesn't make any sense considering your whole put them to death deal. It's LEGALLY a person, not a really a person. You do get that right?
  • Comment on Corporations are People? (2012-09-06 22:38:30)
BTW, I'm not sure many of you actually know what a corporation is so here's the definition. A company or group of people authorized to act as a single entity (legally a person) and recognized as such in law. It allows the group to act as one for legal purposes. That's all. It's not some scary monster out to get all you good socialists. To quote Charlton Heston in Soylent Green, 'It's people."

You can charge the directors, officers, executives and managers as well as the corporation in any criminal case. The fact that DOJ and the states don't always do that is a political decision is a decision based on the facts and, sadly, politics sometimes.
  • Comment on Dear humans (2012-08-29 11:38:03)
The United States has some of the cleanest water, air, and land in the world. Our environmental laws are arguably the strictest in the world. We do use a lot of energy but our use of it is again arguably the cleanest in the world. Comments like "nobody expects China to act humanely" are silly. If you want the world to be happy with humans like this poster indicates - which is stupid, the Earth is not sentient and has no opinion on the subject - then you have to convince other nations like China and India and Russia, etc. to take action. The USA could shut down it's entire industrial economy and it would have no impact on the world at large. Oh, and who the hell is killing a million fricken sharks?

The EU is collapsing into total economic ruin and you folks are still touting it like it's the way to go. Gotta love that.

Well, then, knowing what can happen with they do so, one can't really blame the indigenous population from fighting back, can one?

This shit is boring. Korinthian you keep beating the same old dead horse again and again. It's getting kind of embarrassing for you, dude. We get it. You hate Christians. You hate conservatives. You are so cutting edge you look at people and they bleed. Now tell me, what kind of Panda are you going to start in the new WoW expansion?
  • Comment on winners of the olympics (2012-08-18 20:05:55)
Usually that's the case. What is interesting though is that Mitt Romney actually brought the 2002 Winter Olympics from an initial shortfall to a one hundred million dollar profit.

BTW, I love it when a comment gets hidden not because the commenter says something offensive but simply because they say something others disagree with. Then again simply disagreeing with some people is offensive these days.
