    “Gran Turismo” Review

Gran Turismo: Directed by Neill Blomkamp. With David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Takehiro Hira. Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs – a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec – who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

“Gran Turismo” the movie was heavily promoted in theaters and they didn’t leave much of the story out of the dozens of different times I saw the various trailers, but honestly this type of film really doesn’t need to hold much back. It’s a feel good story of a kid that grew up on video games and somehow managed to become a pretty ok driver in a highly competitive industry, a movie formula I’ve seen hundreds of times but still enjoy seeing from time to time.

No one’s listening to his commands, and he doesn’t know how on Earth he’s supposed to see eye-to-eye with Resh, his bully and competition for top of the class! Picard’s course is set for failure, and if he can’t figure out a way to change things soon… there goes his future.

    Waste Tide

A Guardian Science Fiction Book of the Year. Mimi is drowning in the world’s trash. She’s a ‘waste girl’, a scavenger picking through towering heaps of hazardous electronic detritus. Along with thousands of other migrant workers, she was lured to Silicon Isle, off the southern coast of China, by the promise of steady work and a better life. But Silicon Isle is where the rotten fruits of capitalism and consumer culture come to their toxic end. The land is hopelessly polluted, the workers utterly at the mercy of those in power. And now a storm is gathering, as ruthless local gangs skirmish for control, eco-terrorists conspire, investors hunger for profit, and a Chinese-American interpreter searches for his roots. As these forces collide, conflict erupts – a war between rich and poor, a battle between past and future. Mimi must decide if she will remain a pawn… or change the rules of the game altogether. ‘An accomplished eco-techno-thriller with heart and soul’ DAVID MITCHELL. ‘Waste Tide is a work of spoiled and toxic beauty… It’s more than a timely eco-thriller; it’s a dark mirror held up to our selves’ SIMON INGS.

While I’m a fan of near future science fiction, I think this book veers too closely to mysticism and super-natural explanations for my tastes. The story is well translated and the basic concepts are interesting enough to keep your attention if you enjoy a healthy amount of spooky stuff with your near future political science fiction stories, then “Waste Tide” might be up your alley.
