Skills for Winning at Poker
How to Win at Poker With Savvy Deception
The click-clack of poker chips across the green felt, the turning of the community cards, the steely eyes of your opponents trying to sniff out your next move – poker is a game of skill, psychology, and cunning deception. Master bluffers of Casino Classic can often defeat superior hands and walk away with the pot by the sheer power of persuasion, crafting an illusion of strength from a less than stellar starting hand. We’ll explore the palette of skills to paint convincingly misleading table talk and physical tells that will have less experienced players folding like a cheap lawn chair.
Subtlety and Boldness
Getting away with a bluff against competent opponents is no easy feat. It requires balancing subtle psychological manipulation with bold acting choices to sell your fabricated hand strength. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, an artful bluff must tread softly and carry a big stick.
Master bluffers mix high-risk plays with selectively aggressive betting to keep opponents off balance and doubting the veracity of their table image. Sowing those seeds of uncertainty sets the stage for bolder deceptions that could induce crucial mistakes. But you must tread carefully – bluffs detected too early and too often will spell disaster to your chip stack.
Hard Skills To Hone For Effective Bluffing
- Bet sizing – Bet bigger to portray confidence in a mediocre hand, but not so big that you scare away callers with good hands to crack.
- Timing – Wait for tempting board textures that don’t connect with your cards to rep a made hand that your opponents likely missed.
- Board reading – Understand what draws and made hands your opponents could be representing to fabricate logical bluffs.
- Math skills – Calculate immediate pot odds and implied odds of completing your draws to determine profitable semi-bluffs.
Soft Skills That Support Your Deceptive Play
- Concealing tells – Maintain a relaxed and neutral demeanor that doesn’t telegraph hand strength through physical reactions.
- Table image control – Cultivate an unpredictable style that keeps opponents unsure when you’re bluffing versus value betting strong holdings.
- Observation – Pick up on opponents’ tendencies and timing that makes them more apt to fall for your bluffs. Are they prone to heroes calling marginal hands? Do they only continue betting when they connect strongly with the board? Etc.
- Adaptability – Be willing to quickly change gears if an opponent shows resistance to your fabricated table image and hand representations.
Advanced Bluffing Techniques From the Pros’ Playbooks
Let’s explore some creative bluffing techniques from the crafty playbooks of poker luminaries like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, and Doyle Brunson that have helped them extract so many lucrative pots with sheer guile:
- Semi-bluffing draws – Represent a made hand when you merely hold a draw to improve. Either your bluff succeeds in winning the pot unimproved or your draw hits to strengthen into a value bet.
- Overbetting – Bet much larger than the size of the pot to portray the polarized range strength with either an extremely strong made hand you’re overvaluing or a pure bluff.
- Check-raising – Check early streets to seem vulnerable but spring a sizable raise on later streets against opponents likely to take a free card. Portrays just-made hand strength.
Let’s explore a hand example highlighting sophisticated bluffing in action:
You open with K of hearts and 9 of diamonds from the middle position and the aggressive player on your left 3-bets you pre-flop. You call to set mine with your weak one-pagers. The flop comes Q of clubs, 10 clubs, and 7 of diamonds giving you four nut flush outs along with three overcards plus a gutshot straight draw. When your opponent continues to bet 2/3 pot you decide to float and take one off with your ample equity. They turn bricks with the 3 of clubs but your opponent unexpectedly checks, allowing you to take the betting lead with a large overbet all-in for 3.5x pot. After some deliberation, your opponent reluctantly lays down the top pair top kicker face up. Your boldly sized semi-bluff on the turn overread the flush you were drawing to and induced the crucial fold. Nice hand!
Conclusion
Master bluffers balance artistry and attention to detail with measured aggression to fabricate illusion and uncertainty at the poker table. It takes practice and close study of your opposition to determine optimal timing and sizing for your deceptive plays. But with diligence and an imaginative spirit, you too can bluff bankrolls into the felt like a pro. Just remember, with great power comes great responsibility, so wield your newly forged skills judiciously!

The evil Redjac presence—a.k.a. Jack the Ripper from the Star Trek episode “Wolf in the Fold”—has returned. And this time it has a new terrifying tool at its disposal: the holodeck. As Redjac seizes control of Picard’s Enterprise and spreads holographic horror, the only way for the crew to resist insanity is to become one with their fears. Ship counselor Commander Deanna Troi concocts a daring plan for an away team to become hypnotized holodeck-incarnations of timeless horror monsters, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and others. Once they infiltrate the illusions, they can fight fear with fear. However, will they be able to defeat Redjac and break their hypnosis before their minds are permanently altered? Or will the crew be stuck as movie monsters forever?
Star Trek: Picard’s Academy: Commit No Mistakes TPB
Go back to academy days with one of Starfleet’s most celebrated officers: Jean-Luc Picard! A new collected series by New York Times best-selling author, Sam Maggs.
Before becoming the Federation’s finest, Jean-Luc was an ordinary student at Starfleet Academy with sights on the stars. His path forward was charted: blow his classmates out of the water on the infamous Evasive Maneuvers exam and graduate early. But there’s a detail Cadet Picard hadn’t factored into his plan: the exam was a group project and he’d need to make friends with, ugh, people if he stood a chance at passing.
Federation starships aren’t run by a party of one, after all. During the training exercise, Picard accidentally puts the lives of himself and two of his classmates—Doq and Marty—in danger!

IDW has graciously given me permission to post some preview images of their upcoming comics and while this one is a couple days late, I’m working out my process and I think I have it nailed down. These actually came out yesterday, but if this were done earlier this week like I had planned, here’s what you’d see:
Original Star Trek: Defiant writer-artist duo Christopher Cantwell and Ángel Unzueta delve into the sci-fi horror genre in arc three of the fan-favorite series! Eager to move past the unofficial bounty-hunting mission assigned to them by Starfleet, disgraced former ambassador and Starfleet legend, Worf, and his rogue crew make way for Starbase 99, a run-down remnant of the Dominion War, to complete their fugitive drop-off. The clandestine assignment has left them disillusioned with Starfleet and with one another, but a surprise awaits the Defiant crew, threatening to tear the crew apart even further-literally.
Star Trek: Picard’s Academy #6
It’s do-or-die for Picard and cadets in the finale of Picard’s Academy! Romulans storm the ship while Starfleet remains out of reach and potentially unaware of the threat headed their way, but the cadets have finally come to an agreement, electing Jean-Luc to the captain’s chair. They’re finally willing to follow Picard’s lead, and Picard is finally willing to acknowledge their feedback-now acting as a proper crew. But is it too late? Will Picard fail his crewmates once again and, worse yet, see the start of an interstellar war? So much for graduating early!

Ratchet & Clank
I should point out that I played the remastered version on the PS3, which is slightly better than the PS2 version from my understanding. I purchased a whole collection of Ratchet games back in 2016 for a total of $24, then didn’t play any of them until 2022, so that wasn’t a great use of money, but I’m happy they’re there to be played! This was a fun, if basic, platformer with rudimentary shooting and vehicle mechanics. I say that I like I would expect more from a 20 year old video game, but for what it is, it’s a pretty enjoyable game. The last level though was an absolutely nightmare for me, taking me about 4 or 5 hours with about 50 or 60 tries to actually get it done. It’s completed in three stages and you need to figure out all the various weapons and techniques well before you get into the arena, something I didn’t do because the rest of the game you could just run and gun through nearly everything.
Twitch Playthroughs, the last video is only half of the time I spent on that stupid final level:
