“The Electric State” Review

The Electric State: Directed by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo. With Woody Norman, Millie Bobby Brown, Ann Russo, Greg Cromer. An orphaned teen hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother, teaming up with a smuggler and his wisecracking sidekick.

The trailers for this looked amazing, but what we got was less than amazing and more bland Netflix straight to vhs than I was really hoping for. A few people have said that the film was made for kids and that might explain how mediocre and unchallenging the dialogue was, but that trailer made me feel this was going to be an adult oriented post-apocalyptic story about humans living a world that robots had taken over. Instead we got changing hair styles, music that doesn’t fit the scenes, some weird sibling cuddling, and bad wigs. It’s almost great in every way, but misses the mark for what I was wanting.

A side issue is having real world newscasters / reporters moonlighting in a film. I’m increasingly uncomfortable with seeing real life news personalities like Wolf Blitzer or Anderson Cooper showing up in a film that’s 100% popcorn entertainment. It’s one thing to have Perd Hapley show up from time to time on various news shows in movies, but in a world in which the news is accused of making it all up, it’s weird to see them show up in a fake news bit about robots rebelling and killing everyone.
