Out today: “Star Trek: Sons of Star Trek #2“, by Morgan Hampton.
Jake, Nog, and Alexander find themselves stuck in a never-ending loop of being blown to smithereens aboard the U.S.S. Avery and then revived by Q Jr.-who insists he’s helping them learn some lesson unbeknownst to them. Amid the attack from the Breen, the Avery crew and their strong-willed, bureaucratic captain, Skrain Dukat, refuse to listen to the trio’s musings about an alternate universe. Left with no other choice, they are forced to begrudgingly work together and attempt to step into their Starfleet roles in hopes of helping the Federation ship survive the attack and return home…or be stuck in this alternate reality forever!

I’m a passing fan of Bill Skarsgard and a big fan of H. Jon Benjamin, so I thought this was going to be a sure thing, but sadly it didn’t turn out to be the knock out of the park that I had hoped for. The action is all pretty great, the acting ranges from way over the top to enjoyable, but the music and story seem to be hacked together from multiple other films and other genres. The music specifically I want to point out doesn’t feel like it’s for an action film at all, but something much more emotionally centered and realistic than what BKW actually presents.
I will say that I was impressed with some of the story paths they took, but not so impressed I would suggest checking the film out at all.

In schedules, there once was a dank weed,
From one to two, it found its lead.
No longer confined,
To the shadows, confined,
Now it’s 420, a blossoming seed!
“Knuckles” Review

The first two episodes of this “streaming event” are pretty ok but after that point the series drifts off into some pretty mediocre content with storylines involving a vaguely racist Jewish dinner, a missing father dealt with in the most cringeworthy possible way, and a bowling competition as announced by “The Ocho”, which was the same concept from the movie “Dodgeball”. There’s not much to like after the first 2 episodes are done and much more could have been done to make this entire situation more palatable, from picking a single plot line, to tightening up Knuckles as a character, or picking a single era or style of music to feature throughout the series.
This is completely skippable and not worth your time.
