Io’s surface: under constuction
Tags:APOD, Science!, Space, Wallpaper
Explanation: Like the downtown area of your favorite city, the roads you drive to work on, and any self-respecting web site … Io’s surface is constantly under construction. This moon of Jupiter holds the distinction of being the Solar System’s most volcanically active body — its bizarre looking surface continuously formed and reformed by lava flows. Generated using 1996 data from NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, this high resolution composite image is centered on the side of Io that always faces away from Jupiter. It has been enhanced to emphasize Io’s surface brightness and color variations, revealing features as small as 1.5 miles across. The notable absence of impact craters suggests that the entire surface is covered with new volcanic deposits much more rapidly than craters are created. What drives this volcanic powerhouse? A likely energy source is the changing gravitational tides caused by Jupiter and the other Galilean moons as Io orbits the massive gas giant planet. Heating Io’s interior, the pumping tides would generate the sulfurous volcanic activity.

A quick and dirty impression of The Liberty, Inc’s Obama salute.

NO powered artificial eyes
Taken at a medical training facility. I’ve seen many warnings
around an MRI but the “powered artifical eyes” is new to me.
Anybody seen these eyes in use?
Niagara Falls
Shot on my way back from Toronto a few years ago. Even if you live half an hour from the falls, it never gets any less magnificent. Unless your a small child who was woken up and dragged out of the car. The odd motes around my son’s face are reflections from the constant mist messing with the camera.
October Storm
October 2006, Buffalo New York. The snow you see in these images fell in one night. The trees were not ready for winter, and many branches simply snapped under the extreme weight of the thick, wet blankets of snow. It was very creepy standing on my back porch that night, the heavy silence punctuated by the gunshot-like snapping of tree limbs.
The tables you see in the first shot are cable spools on top of tree stumps, to give an idea of scale. Most people in the area were without power for up to a week because of power lines snapping everywhere. The weight of the snow actually pulled some telephone poles out of their moorings due to the wires being pulled down.
Also, enjoy the action shot of my neighbor snowblowing.
The good: Watching neighbors come together to pull branches off of everyone’s yard, and offer food & supplies to each other.
The bad: People who had to wait even longer for power because assholes stole the fallen lines and sold the copper for scrap.
Tree Frog – High Res
I took this picture outside of my in-law’s house. He was sitting on their outside wall making a sound that made him seem 10x bigger than he was. He was a little under the size of a half-dollar in the position he was in. He didn’t mind the camera at all though! High red original is 3072 x 2xxx res, scaled this one to 1280 x 9xx in order to upload. Taken with an Olympus SP-510UZ 8.1mp. This is my first submission to MCS. I have a thing for super close up shots. Enjoy!
