This is one of the best movie adaptations that I’ve ever read, hands down, no joke. It’s only three issues long, but the entire story feels complete and everything just works perfectly. Is that because of the fantastic source material? Or is that because of the adaptation author, Andy Schmidt? Guess I’ll need to find more of his work and find out!

Star Trek The Next Generation The Battle of Betazed

As the war between the Dominion and the Federation rages across the Alpha Quadrant, Counselor Deanna Troi finds she is faced with more than she expected when she kidnaps a telepathic killer to bring to the aid of the resistance movement on the occupied planet of Betazed. At the same time, the Enterprise-E is leading a Starfleet attack against a Cardassian space station is orbit above the skies of Betazed. Dominion scientists are using the Betazed people as raw material in their experiments to create a more highly evolved Jem’Hadar — the genetically engineered warrior species which forms the core of the Dominion forces. What transpires is an awesome battle — including hostages and narrow escapes — with unexpected twists which lead to a truly explosive ending.

This book could have done well with a character guide at the beginning of it, but for the most part I was familiar with the main characters, save a few that were obviously from stories that i’ve no memory of. The book itself was on sale recently for $1, so I figured i’d like to read about how Batazed was taken over by the Dominion, but this is more of a story of how TNG ships saved the planet from the occupying force. The ending was a little too Deus Ex Machina for my tastes, but it didn’t leave a bad impression, just seemed to trite and convenient.

It was well worth the price of admission though.

Star Trek Mission’s End

 

The most important “lost” tale of the Star Trek saga can now be told: The final mission of the original Starship Enterprise and her crew. What prompts Mr. Spock and Doctor McCoy to retire from Starfleet? What earns Kirk his promotion to Admiral? And what is the mystery of Archenar-IV that threatens to tear the Federation itself apart? All will be revealed!

 

It says it’s the final mission, but i’m pretty sure we’ve seen a few other “final missions” for the TOS crew. I did enjoy this story, it has some real classic science fiction elements to it, with an abandoned planetship being run by a society of giant spiders.

One unrelated note, I bought this at a convention in a “whole story pack” where they sell you the entire series of single issues in one bundle, which you can’t open to inspect. I got issues 1-4 of the series, only to find out that there was one more missing issue. I was able to read it online, but man that sorta steamed me a little bit.

Yesterday for dinner my wife and I watched an episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine where some random crazy Trill decided that he alone deserved to host the Dax symbiote. He took control of the station and forced the transfer, only to be ultimately defeated by the DS9 crew, then sent off on his way without the symbiote.

Today, incidentally, I got to a Star Trek Mini series that I bought at a comic book convention six months ago and sure enough, there was that same random Trill again, this time out for blood and wanting to kill all of the symbiots, since if he can’t have them, no one should, and after all, aren’t they just parasites that took control of their civilization years ago?

It’s a fun story, but made more fun by the random happenstance.

Star Trek PIcard The Last Best Hope

An original novel based on the new Star Trek TV series!

A thrilling novel leading into the new CBS series, Una McCormack’s The Last Best Hope introduces you to brand new characters featured in the life of beloved Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard-widely considered to be one of the most popular and recognizable characters in all of science fiction.

I was really hoping that this book would be more than a checklist of things that needed to be set up to be mentioned in the first episode of the series, but ultimately that’s all this turned out to be. The federation is nearly unrecognizable in this story, we’re told that stuff is going on but never really get to see it, and this is the second Trek book in a row where the author just straight up forgot to describe the ships that were involved at all. I know from the comic book series that Picard’s ship is actually the new flagship class ship that was featured in the “Star Trek: Online” game, but there was no mention of the unique styles of the ship or even that it was the new flagship class.

I’m also somewhat confused by the decision by the story team to change the events from the movies and comics that have come before, primarily that it was a star named Hobus that had a unique property to it, and when it went super nova it had unique effects through SubSpace and not just normal space. There’s also some significant changes to the story for Spock, in that in the movies he was an active participant in the attempt to save Romulus, but in this story, he’s only mentioned once, and in a way that makes it clear he had nothing to do with the saving of the system or the failure to save it as shown in the 2009 Star Trek film.

If you’re watching the series, there’s nothing in this book that will help your understanding of what you’re seeing on screen. If you want something that might do that, read the latest Star Trek: Picard comic series, then you’ll at least find out where the two Romulans on Picard’s winery come from.
