Reddit is in full meltdown
The title is incorrect actually, as it seems like only 1-2% of reddit is still dark. This is a clear indication of what happens to a popular site when the owners don’t take heed to the user’s concerns, something that I’ve struggled with on my own sites, and I’m only a single guy working on a site, and not a group of people with corporate overlords like Reddit. My day job is in one of those massive corporations, so I appreciate how difficult it can get consensus on new features and how to implement them, and can really appreciate how slow that wheel of progress can turn. On the flip side, running MCS has shown me how quickly people can blow the fuck up when a singular person like me changes something major on the site (drop down comments, ratings, mcs+, et al) so I think I’m able to see both sides of this argument, and I’m also seeing additional motivation to get some more work done on this site to make things….better.
- First step of course is to get the rest of these damn posts tagged. considering I started with about 30,000 posts to tag, I’m feeling pretty good to be approaching 3,000 today.
- Next step is to fix the image submission and posting on mcs+. I’ve always wanted the front page to be my own posts with posts that I’ve enjoyed from other people, the struggle has always been with how appropriate the content is and how impossible/difficult it is to get it from the sfw site to the NSFW site if someone happened to post something that had a vague hint of a female nipple (male nipples are just fine though). We had the forums for a fair long while but the software that I was using was less than perfect and was letting all sorts of spam and virus links onto the site, and since it was being under utilized it was taken down. I still feel there’s a slight need for that though, so that’s going to be part of the MCS+ side of things.
- Revenue for MCS is a difficult thing to get my head around. Google Adsense has banned us for a while, and in the nearly 10 years the site has been up, they were the only ones that actually paid enough to make it work the time and effort, along with the reliability of not having ads with autoplay videos or viruses. I’ve been emboldened by sites like Metafilter or news sites that have people pay for access or the ability to comment. Back when I first introduced MCS+ it was $25 for a lifetime membership, then I kinda dropped that after 5-6 months of no purchases. I’m not sure how it’s really going to look in the future, but that’s something that I feel strongly about: removing all ads and letting the community support the site, either through something like Patreon or purchasing monthly subscriptions for content / posting abilities, somewhere in the realms of 1-2 dollars a month at most.
There are 3,000 posts left to tag
There are now only 98 days remaining until my self imposed deadline, with just 3000 left to tag, I’ll need to do 30.612 posts per day to be done in time.
So close. going to take the weekend off from tagging though, I just bought an xbox one. add me if you’d like: tgiokdi I think I’m mostly going to be playing around in the MC Collection.

Comparing this to modern games would be a disservice, as this was one of the first ps3 games that were released, so you’re going to find a lot older gaming tropes, with infrequent checkpoints and massive rooms full of weapons right before boss fights among them. The story is pretty good, but I’m not a fan of the way they stitched the different levels together with a narrator. Also, this was a pretty short game, beat it in about 10 hours total.

not sure where I stand on this one. it was a beautiful game that I would absolutely suggest everyone give a try, but the gameplay mechanics frustrated me to no end, and I was playing on easy. There’s two scenes in particular that stood out in my mind, the first being the first real sneak/fight in the game where you’re going through a tilted building and are trying to clear a room before your party can advance. I tried that thing over 30 times, finally just gave up and sprinted through it, climbing up a ramp and killing a single clicker as it tried to climb up, then ran around the whole room doing that again and again. It felt cheap and out of place with the rest of the game.
The second example I have is when you’re getting to a dam and are trying to figure out how to cross over a bridge of sorts. I spent 5-10 minutes looking around the attached building, on the path up to the overflowing damn, in the giant stack of boards and tree trunks, and not a single thing could be used to cross the bridge. Turns out you’re supposed to jump into the high flow overflowing dam and just swim into it to find a board to carry Ellie around (which is another minor complaint that took me out of the game every time it happened.) I just to say, I’ve personally had nightmares of being pulled into spillways at dams before and the lack of logic in this particular puzzle made me irrationally angry.
It’s a good game with one of the strongest stories that I’ve ever become emotional invested in with some of the most frustrating and fractured game play that I would have expected from such a highly vaunted game.
Sidenote, I’m really trying to burn through my ps3 backlog so I can sell off the ps3, and this game really drove home the face that’s going to be a smart move. If this is the best the system has to offer, I’m not expecting very much from the 8 other games I’m about to play through.

Post-Human Series Books 1-4 review
Humanity has made a leap into the future, but are they ready for what they’ll become?
Source: Amazon.com
This is the second novel that I’ve read through Amazon’s (new?) “Kindle Unlimited” program, the first of which was Angles of Attack, which was a great novel in of itself. The Post-Human Series popped up as a suggested read after I was done with Angles of Attack, and since I’m always in the search for great Singularity fiction I figured I’d give it a try, and I’m really happy I did. The series is always on the cusp of being too cheesy or pulling back, but unlike some other Singularity stories, the Post-Human series takes the obvious choices and follows the story where it should logically go. There’s a couple twists half way through that I haven’t seen in this genre before, which is surprising as I’ve read every Singularity book I could get my grubby fingers on.

You’ve got red on you. This reminds me, I just watched “Juan of the Dead”, same concept, but set in Cuba. it was terribly good, very honest to itself, which is something I loved about Shaun of the Dead.
Also, I love those two actors, they’re the best.

Jesse Ventura Won’t See ‘American Sniper’
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — American Sniper is tops at the box office but don’t expect to see former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura lining up at a theater for it.
Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, won $1.8 million in a defamation lawsuit last year against the estate of the late Chris Kyle, the SEAL protagonist of the movie, which has sparked debate over whether snipers should be considered heroes. Ventura said Wednesday he won’t see the film partly because Kyle is no hero to him.
“A hero must be honorable, must have honor. And you can’t have honor if you’re a liar. There is no honor in lying,” Ventura told The Associated Press

‘The Man In The High Castle’ and how Amazon can’t get their shit together
Tags:Books, Television, The Man In The High Castle
Just watched the first (and to date, only one made afaik) episode of Amazon’s new show from their 2015 Pilot Season named “The Man In The High Castle”. This was a good show, and I wish that I could talk more about it, but the entire experience was just incredibly mind boggling that a company the size of Amazon can’t get their shit together enough to make it easy to view and then properly discuss the show with other people outside of the limits of their own comment section.
1 – silverlight is necessary to view video on Amazon. Yes, you can “temporarily” change over to flash, but in what universe that that make sense? I’m not going to install Microsoft’s bloated carcass of a streaming solution just to watch the one or two things that I manage to find on Amazon Prime Instant Streaming, which leads me to point 2…
2 – APISS* has a bad interface, not ‘slap your mama’ bad, but just bad enough that it feels like they’re intentionally making it difficult to search and view episodes and movies. My primary point of contention here is that they lump in ALL their offerings for video, regardless of their APISS or something from their “pay too much to rent this” catalog. Combine that with no viable solution for desktop support (Kodi, windows media center, et al) and it means digging out a keyboard and mouse to view anything on my main TV. I do own one of those fancy pants smart TVs, but it’s back in my office, and again, the interface is horrible on it, so there’s no no joy in trying to discover content.
3 – NO trailers for any of their new shows, at least none that I can find in 5 minutes of googling. Best results for “Man in the High Castle trailer” is a student made trailer that actually does a good job of it, but it’s not the show that I’m looking for. I settled for a dust cover from the book that the series is being adapted from
4 – voting for pilot season is difficults. If you were to go to the page for this show, where would you think you would vote this show in an attempt to indicate to Amazon that you’d like to see more episodes? See where nearly 5,000 people have rated the show? Nope, that’s not where you vote to have it selected for a full season. As far as I can see, there simply is no link to the 2015 Pilot Season page where you have to fill out a survey per series to indicate to Amazon your enjoyment. I’m pretty sure that Amazon will see both sections and be able to figure things out, but why split the votes off into two different sections like that?
My suggestions? Dump Silverlight, get a unified User Experience team that can specify and enforce application design standards across all devices and applications, then get this bad boy some actual apps for desktop users that are using a 10 foot interface. Make some trailers and make it obvious to viewers how to vote for their favorite shows. Obvious point is obvious, but these are all items that Netflix has encountered and risen above years ago.
This just reminded me of my recent experience trying to view APISS content on my android phone which I was at the hospital recently, what a clusterfuck that was. I already had the Amazon App Store on my phone, so I searched for and installed the Amazon Prime Instant Streaming App, only for it to tell me I had to install yet another Amazon app, which as far as I can tell is just Amazon.com in app form. It’s sole function is to give me alerts for things that I simply do not care about.
(teehee, APISS = Amazon Prime Instant Streaming Service. Just made that up, right here, it was me, and it makes me giggle little a child.)
