  • 4th of July – Our Independence

    1.jpg (107 KB)

Hyperspectral images of a draft of the Declaration of Independence reveal that it originally used the word ‘subjects’ instead of ‘citizens’ at a critical juncture. After writing “our fellow subjects,” author Thomas Jefferson scrubbed it out and replaced it with the familiar alternative.

To the Library of Congress, whose Preservation Research and Testing Division analyzed the document with the latest high-resolution camera equipment, it illustrates an important moment: “when [Jefferson] reconsidered his choice of words and articulated the recognition that the people of the fledgling United States of America were no longer subjects of any nation, but citizens of an emerging democracy.”

    2.jpg (83 KB)

The sensitivites surrounding the revelation are obvious, as is its humor. Perhaps Jefferson simply forgot, in his haste to draft the document that would shape his nation’s future. Or maybe we’re seeing a decisive instant, a decision about that future’s very nature being made in ink.

The Library of Congress often discovers unusual things while examining ancient artifacts. Especially maps and documents, where modern tech sees what the naked eye can’t: corrections, changes, and severely faded or damaged elements.

    3.jpg (59 KB)

The correction is in the part of the declaration concerning grievances against King George III.

“It had been a spine-tingling moment when I was processing data late at night and realized there was a word underneath citizens,” said scientist Fenella France, who revealed the correction at the LoC’s labs, in a press release. “Then I began the tough process of extracting the differences between spectrally similar materials to elucidate the lost text.”

According to the Library, the correction was suspected in the past–similar language exists in state constitutions–but not demonstrable until now.

I’m headed to Shore Leave 44!

    July 26 – 28, 2024
Wyndham Lancaster Resort and Convention Center in Lancaster, PA

After many years of saving, I’m heading off on a trip to visit the fine folks at Shore Leave, this being the 44th event they’ve hosted.  This is going to be their first year at a new location (the old one is no longer among the living), so it’s a great jumping on point and gives me the opportunity to meet a significant number of authors that I’ve written and told you all about.  The list includes: Aaron RosenbergAmy SissonChristopher L. BennettDavid GerroldDavid MackDayton WardDerek Tyler Atticodiana dru botsfordGreg CoxHoward WeinsteinKeith R.A. DeCandidoKelli FitzpatrickLaura WareLorraine AndersonMichael Jan FriedmanRigel Ailur, and Scott Pearson.  The authors in bold are ones that agreed to a pre-show interview, most of which are already done and just need some editing and framing from yours truly.  The interviews all have fun technical problems (guess I need to record their mics too?), fun nature problems (Florida thunderstorm in the middle of KRAD’s time), and possible interruptions by cats.  I’m enthusiastic about the content, but far from top level professional.  Yet.

The interviews will start dropping soon, and I plan on having an after action post about what went on up there along with pictures, if I can remember to take some while I’m all amped up to meet cool Trek people.  I’m told there’s also going to be a number of tv / movie personalities there as well, but they’re outside the scope of what I’m working on here.

Level 251: Erik Desiderio (Last Epoch In Concert)

A little more than two years ago, Erik Desiderio was on Level to talk about music he’d written for Last Epoch, which was in early access at the time.

This gave us many reasons to chat! That concert, by the way, will apparently be streamed? Unsure, check here and here! The concert is on Saturday, February 24th at 7 PM PST (UTC-8).

Hi Friends: Thank you so much for listing my newest Kindle book in your book club. I believe your readers should like it, too. The book itself is a mix of a behind-the-scenes look at what the best writers have done so well in Star Trek storytelling, how freelance writers have made their mark in the franchise and a tutorial on how to write your own non-fiction book. Best of health and luck in 2022, Trekkers! Live long and prosper, Dr. Joe
