  • Maelstrom Rifters Trilogy review

    51IEv5QJ7LL Maelstrom (Rifters Trilogy)

An enormous tidal wave on the west coast of North America has just killed thousands. Lenie Clarke, in a black wetsuit, walks out of the ocean onto a Pacific Northwest beach filled with the oppressed and drugged homeless of the Asian world who have gotten only this far in their attempt to reach America. Is she a monster, or a goddess? One thing is for sure: all hell is breaking loose. This dark, fast-paced, hard SF novel returns to the story begun in Starfish: all human life is threatened by a disease (actually a primeval form of life) from the distant prehuman past. It survived only in the deep ocean rift where Clarke and her companions were stationed before the corporation that employed them tried to sterilize the threat with a secret underwater nuclear strike. But Clarke was far enough away that she was able to survive and tough enough to walk home, 300 miles across the ocean floor. She arrives carrying with her the potential death of the human race, and possessed by a desire for revenge. Maelstrom is a terrifying explosion of cyberpunk noir by a writer whose narrative, says Robert Sheckley, “drives like a futuristic locomotive.”

Not as good as the first book, I feel like there was something to the underwater seclusion of the setting that really gave the story a unique and cool feel. Maelstrom is still a fun read, but it has the burden of being the middle books, so there’s no real beginning and no real ending, just a lot of good middling action that will eventually get us somewhere interesting.

Level 80 Stephen E Cox Farpoint

farpoint soundtrack 1024x576 Level 80: Stephen E Cox (Farpoint)

We’ve been doing so many interviews lately with composers about VR games and I’ve played none of them, all though I’ve wanted to play all of them, but this one might be the one I’ve wanted to play the most, because I love first person shooters, and I love the music.Stephen E Cox wrote the music for Farpoint, a first-person shooter PlayStation VR game. used to teach at Full Sail University in Florida, and they do music and entertainment degrees, production, games, recording – that kind of stuff. Anyway, he talks about that a couple different times.
The music is a great blend of real and synthetic – I love all the string sweeps (portamentos!) that are incorporated throughout, and some gorgeous solo work. It’s good stuff.

    Century Rain review

    41HUKZJCMLL Century Rain

300 years in the future, Verity Auger is a specialist in the archaeological exploration of Earth, rendered uninhabitable after the technological catastrophe known as the Nanocaust. After a field-trip goes badly wrong, Verity is forced to redeem herself by particpating in a dangerous mission.

A pretty fun story that I really hope Alastair Reynolds gets back to one day. I found myself enjoying the stuff in the ‘past’ to be more interesting than the scifi side of the story, but was very happy when they finally intersected and all the different story elements came together in a pretty spectacular fashion. Like most of Reynold’s books, I highly suggest this book.

Level 76 Erik Desiderio Diablo III Rise of the Necromancer RememberRemember

unnamed Level 76: Erik Desiderio (Diablo III: Rise of the Necromancer, Remember:Remember)

Composer Erik Desiderio worked on the very first VR game made from an existing property, the Adventure Time VR game. Working on that positioned him nicely to work on a lot of other VR games and experiences in the early stages of all of that technology.

Erik also got to work on the new DLC for Diablo III called “Rise of the Necromancer” from Blizzard Entertainment. He can’t share any of the music yet, sadly, but we got to talk about it a bit.

And be sure to check out Remember:Remember, a creepy alien abduction-type VR experience that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
