    The Meg

    910HAfRPPuL. SL1500 834x1024 The Meg

A deep-sea submersible filled with an international research crew lies disabled at the bottom of the Pacific after having been attacked by a massive shark previously thought to be extinct. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao) to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now he must risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time!

There’s two distinct movies here, one that takes place far far below the surface and another that takes place on the surface and near beaches where every day people are playing in the water. Neither of these stories are particularly interesting, though to me the first half is by far the superior of the two. There’s some obvious Chinese pandering through the film, though I feel somewhat conflicted at calling it “pandering” since this movie was a joint effort between American and Chinese film financing and production companies, so can it truly be pandering if they’re trying to sell the movie to their own audiences? As ill fitting as the word is, I’m quite comfortable with calling it obvious and out of scope of what I was expecting for the film. There’s some great CGI to be had, but they obviously either used several effects houses or cheaped out on some, because with ever great scene with effects is another will just as awful ones.

To sum up the film, there’s a scene towards the end of the third act in which Jason Statham is in a personal submarine that has had one of it’s control surfaces ripped off, leaving a jagged shank of metal hanging off the side, which he uses, to great effect, as a knife. As I was writing in my notes “hey that’s like a knife fight, but with a shark” he proceeded to jump out of the personal sub, WITH A KNIFE, and proceeds to attempt to stab the shark, which we’ve already confirmed several times, is the size of a billionaire’s yacht.

    It’s not a great movie, it’s not a terrible movie, it’s a whelming movie.

    HotelArtemisposterbigimageb59900 Hotel Artemis

Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ follows the Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only emergency room for criminals.

Do not look up who’s in the movie. Jodie Foster is there, that’s all you need to know to get in the door and it’s much more enjoyable if you go in without knowing who else is eventually going to show up and blow your mind. Highly recommended.

    Equalizer 2

    81kmg1n1W6L. SL1500 830x1024 Equalizer 2

Denzel Washington returns as Robert McCall, serving an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but this time it’s personal.

The tagline pretty much sums up how weird this movie was: “There is no equal”. Equal parts excellent action spy thriller and unintentionally cheesy action humor, I never found myself enjoying much of the film. Watchable if you’re bored and have nothing to do, though I’ve heard that being bored can sometimes open your mind to things that you should really be thinking about anyways.

So, instead of watching “The Equalizer 2”, I suggest taking a couple hours for yourself and think about what’s happened do you recently, how you would have changed how you reacted to those things, and how you can make yourself a better person.

I’ve heard this is one of the best selling Valiant comics in years, but it was still underwhelming for me.  Hopefully the story makes a little more sense after a few more issues.

Wasn’t on my pull list, but my comic shop pulled it for me anyways, thank god.  This was a fun but brief journey back to the Doctor Horrible Universe.

What a terrible conclusion to a terrible storyline.

A stunning tale of fantastic four members all coming together to do fantastic things against an unbeatable enemy.  I’m happy that Mr Fantastic has a name for particular types of beings in the Marvel Multiverse, but I’m concerned that with the end of this issue comes the end of their multiverse / outer space adventures.  I’m not really looking forward to them rejoining Earth and am much happier reading about them doing fantastic things elsewhere.

That cover is gorgeous isn’t it?  The story inside is pretty damn fantastic and they perfectly get the dialogue, which has been a struggle for past Firefly books.  I look forward to the next issue!

Boring and unneeded.  Skip it and just go see the movie.

Dark and muddled art but I like where the story is going.  I’m not too familiar with the friendship between Ninja-K and The Eternal Warrior, but I get the impression they’re pretty darn close.

I honestly felt like this was an episode of the Star Trek Animated series.  Fantastic retro art direction for both the Trek crew and the Robots in disguise.

This issue left me feeling like there’s no possible way for them to top what they’ve done.  Yet I’ve felt that way for the last few Vader issues, so since I was wrong before, I’ll be happy to be wrong in the future.

Please Support the Work We Did In October 2018!

With the death of Project Wonderful, MCS is going to be financially struggling for the rest of the year.  I have alternative income coming from the new advertisers, but they require a 60 day wait from the day an invoice is issued, then another 10 days after that for payment to be received, so it won’t be until January that the finances are going to be in order.  You can help out though!

In order to do this, I’ve created a page at Patreon.

Check out these awesome benefits available:

Become a Patreon today, for as low as $2 a month, MCS+ badges kick in at the $5 level, which according to my calculations is 2 bud lights or 1 craft beer.  Do you feel like the entertainment provided on MCS is worth a single craft beer? I do, which is why I sink so much time and effort into the site.

To those of you that are already Patrons, you have my heart filled thanks.
