Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th 2018

The Thanksgiving holiday threw my schedule for a loop and I wasn’t able to get to my LCS in a timely manner, but it was a good pickup when I did make my way there.

  Meh.  Backup story was more interesting than the main story.

  It’s weird how Faith changes shape from panel to panel, but they ARE in a dreamworld, so maybe that’s why?

  This is one boring as hell storyline.

  I enjoy the DC Insiders much more than these previews books, pretty much everything they’re highlighting here has already been mentioned elsewhere.

  Final issue I think?  The cover I got was amazing and I loved the holographic nature of it.  The story was a bit goofy and guest starred a couple people that are actively doing other things in their own books, so it was somewhat weird to see them doing completely out of character things in Q&W. Lookin at you XO.

Infinity War – Nidavellir , chris kesler

A while ago I had the great pleasure of creating a whole bunch of pieces of key art for the Nidavellir sequence in Avengers: Infinity War. In this particular case I had the opportunity to start pretty much from a blank canvas and develop things from the ground up. In the process I used a mix of 2D and 3D to develop some kind of working logic (with various 3D movement studies of the facility and star gate mechanism), backed up by 2D illustrations based on 3D renders. In the first stage (which is mostly seen here) it was more about capturing the overall vibe/mood rather than the intricate workings of the star forge.

One of the most complex Sub-D models I’ve ever done :X “Is This Heaven” will be an episodic proof-of-concept directed by former LucasFilm artist, writer/director Bastiaan Koch. I did a ZBrush concept model first which made it into Nothin’ But Mech 3 and then manually remodeled it. The challenge was definitely the functionality that it needs as it was going to move a lot in the movie. We also needed the inside of the cockpit for a couple of shots. Materials, Rigging, Animation, Rendering, Compositing was done by the incredible team at Marauder Film. Big thanks to my colleagues and friends Alex Zapata who modeled the upper inside of the cockpit and the rocket launcher, and to Perry Leijten and his insane rigging skills to make him moveable!

The past dozen or so paintings I’ve worked on have been incredibly challenging and difficult to finish – my observation and painting skills feel like they’re rusted and stuck, if that makes any sense at all. Whenever I feel like this I know it’s time to get my shit together and start doing regular studies again, no matter how busy I am.
