    Jessica Jones Season Three

Created by Melissa Rosenberg. With Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, Carrie-Anne Moss. Following the tragic end of her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City.

The best of the three seasons, but maybe that’s because they decided to just not use Jessica Jones in about half the episodes, then have someone else be the main focus for half the episodes that she was actually in. It’s a shame that this character is the last of the Marvel / Netflix relationship, but hopefully something good can come from this.

Maybe Disney+ will be able to learn from the mistakes of the Netflix series?

I read just the Nightflyers novella, none of the other stories in this collection.

It was ok, slightly different than the show and still ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. It was not satisfying for me to read and I really wish it was a full length story that had a better resolution for the aliens that were the whole point of the story.

    Toy Story 4

Directed by Josh Cooley. With Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Tony Hale. When a new toy called “Forky” joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.

Not the best Pixar film I’ve ever seen, but even Pixars worst is miles better than some other company’s best attempts at telling a great story. This is mostly a Woody story with the other characters stepping in from time to time, but if I had to guess, I think Tom Hanks had 10x the lines of anyone else in the movie, and the changing of Po Peep’s outfit was curious to me. She’s no longer a sheep herder in a dress, now she’s a staff welding warrior that don’t need to kid to make her feel fulfilled.

    Godzilla King of the Monsters

Directed by Michael Dougherty. With Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Ken Watanabe. The crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

Absolutely fantastic followup to the 2014 Godzilla film, I enjoyed nearly ever moment of the film. There’s a couple plot points that they follow that don’t really interest me, but in the spirit of not spoiling it: man this was a great film.

    Kung Fu Panda

Directed by Mark Osborne, John Stevenson. With Jack Black, Ian McShane, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman. The Dragon Warrior has to clash against the savage Tai Lung as China’s fate hangs in the balance. However, the Dragon Warrior mantle is supposedly mistaken to be bestowed upon an obese panda who is a novice in martial arts.

Back when Movies Anywhere was released they gave out free movies.

    This was one of them!

I’ve forgotten how much heart this movie had, as well as how spectacularly beautiful it could be, specifically the beginning cinematic and the portion of the film dealing with a death by a peach tree. It’s not hard to believe that they did multiple films and tv series, all of which did pretty well on their own merits, unlike the How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

    Dunkirk

Directed by Christopher Nolan. With Fionn Whitehead, Barry Keoghan, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy. Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

Unintentionally the second story I’ve seen this week that used similar story devices of showing the same event from multiple perspectives, of which I think Dunkirk did better than “flags of our fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima”. Tom Hardy specifically really did a great job with Christopher Nolen’s direction and filled out a role in which he doesn’t show his full face until the last 2 minutes of the flick.

I highly recommend this, it was much better than I was expecting.

A great series that suffers from season bloat, but if you consume it one episode a week it mostly works. I do love seeing Brendan Fraser back in the mix and Alan Tudyk always pleases.

    Nightflyers

Created by Jeff Buhler. With Eoin Macken, David Ajala, Jodie Turner-Smith, Angus Sampson. A crew of scientists embark on a mission aboard a ship called the Nightflyer to investigate a mysterious alien signal, but soon begin to question if there is already something on-board the Nightflyer with them.

We only got one season of this show, and I guess I’m part of the problem. I watched the first episode and gave up on it until the season was well done and over with, then finally got around to it this last weekend. There’s fantastic special effects and one of the coolest spaceship designs in recent memory, and a story line that has a couple weird detours but is ultimately incredibly interesting as a thought experiment.

It’s a shame that season one ended on a cliffhanger, I’m hoping that the story doesn’t do that in the novella that I just downloaded to my kindle.

    Flags of our Fathers

Directed by Clint Eastwood. With Ryan Phillippe, Barry Pepper, Joseph Cross, Jesse Bradford. The life stories of the six men who raised the flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima, a turning point in World War II.

A sad story of sad things happening off on a sad little island. I was pretty confused by a couple odd scenes of older guys in hospitals and falling down stairs, it really seemed out of place with the rest of the film that was set in the tail end of WW2.

The Green Book Guide to Freedom

In the 1930s, a black postal carrier from Harlem named Victor Green published a book that was part travel guide and part survival guide. It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book, and it helped African-Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph.

Fantastic documentary about the green book, which another sorta fictional movie recently sorta featured.

I think this documentary was better!

Sam sets off across LA to find her, and along the way he uncovers a conspiracy far more bizarre.

I expected more from David Robert Mitchell, but as weird as “It Follows” was, I guess “Under The Silver Lake” fits right in with his style of movies.

    Letters from Iwo Jima

Directed by Clint Eastwood. With Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase. The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.

The opposing side of the battle briefly explored in “Flags of our Fathers”, but with Letters, more time is spent on the island itself, with explanations of what the Japanese were up to in the time leading up to the American invasion.

They were both ok films, but Letters was my first experience with “Audio description” dubbing, I’m not able to pay attention to both subtitles and the movie itself, having both running at the same time usually ruins the experience for me. With “Audio description” though, nothing is ruined and even further insight is given about what’s going on and where you should pay more attention. I’m going to keep my eyes open for other movies with this that I may have skipped in the past because of the lack of official dubbing.
