    Underwater

Directed by William Eubank. With Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Jessica Henwick, Vincent Cassel. A crew of aquatic researchers work to get to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. But the crew has more than the ocean seabed to fear.

Amazingly better than I could have hoped for, I was on the edge of my seat for nearly the entire movie. There’s one confusing lull in the story, but that gets handled in due course.

See this in theaters if possible!

    John Carter The End

Centuries have passed and time has taken its toll on Mars. Conflict burns across the landscape. A war of supremacy and genocide at the hands of a brutal despot has brought the planet to the edge of collapse. A search party has finally located an aged John Carter and Dejah Thoris, living in quiet seclusion on a desert moon, in perpetual mourning for their lost son. How could they be Mars’ last hope?

Introducing a John Carter story like you’ve never seen before, from co-writers Brian Wood (Star Wars, DMZ, Northlanders) and Alex Cox (Adventure Time), joined by artist Hayden Sherman (Civil War II: Kingpin).

    Reviews:
“Hayden Sherman does a great job… It is primitive and powerful. Each panel looks dangerous, like you could be sliced to ribbons by the cliff faces.” – Comic Crusaders
“It never occurred to me that John Carter and Batman would have much in common, but I hadn’t read John Carter: The End yet.” – Slack Jaw Punks
“A perfect continuation for the stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the characters of Barsoom. This should please, delight and thrill old and new fans alike.” – Outright Geekery

I’ve been getting more and more interested in the John Carter mythos, first introduced to me by the Disney movie, and this was my first purchase of Carter comics that I’ve been able to get around to reading. I have the adaptation around my office somewhere, just need to dig it out and read it.

I realize that starting with a series named “The End” was likely a bad idea, but there wasn’t anything here that was confusing, and the issues were only $1 each during the annual MidTown sale.

Here’s the book that I was most impressed with it’s cover: leagueofcomicgeeks.com/comic/4679913/john-carter-the-end-3?variant=8038692

    Fantastic, isn’t it?

    Deconstructed

Jennifer Walters has survived the second Civil War…barely. But, having risen from the rubble, she re-enters the world a very different kind of hero. Fueled by a quiet rage, she is determined to move forward, to go on with her life – but the pain of the past and all that she’s lost is always there. An undercurrent, a pulse waiting to quicken -and trigger Jen’s transformation into the one thing she doesn’t have control over… COLLECTING: HULK 1-6

She-Hulk is now just “hulk”, which isn’t confusing at all, but makes sense in light of the fact that the original “hulk” is dead at this point in the Marvel timeline. Unlike the Daredevil mini series I read right before this series, there’s no redemption arc here, just some really sad stuff that really made me sad for Jennifer.

    Star Trek The Modala Imperative

Read reviews and discussion of Star Trek: The Modala Imperative #1 from Michael Jan Friedman and Pablo Marcos, published by DC Comics

An 8 book mini series split into two stories, one with the TOS crew and one with the TNG crew, published right before Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country was released with letters in the back half from fans concerned about where the franchise was going and suggesting various things about new strips. Covers are all by Adam Hughes, which is apparent if you check out Uhura on #1 of the TOS series and Troi on the TNG series.

The stories themselves are just ok, and the interior art is just as ok, but I’m more impressed with the letter pages at the very end of each issue and the timing of things. It’s not a bad series to check out, and the hand off from TOS to TNG is done very well.

It’s fun to see this version of the bad guys too.

    Fantastic Four

When Reed and Sue decide the family needs to relax, they take Ben, Johnny and the kids on a year-long vacation – through all of time and space! And in the absence of Marvel’s First Family, a handpicked substitute FF – Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk and the new Ms. Thing – stand ready to guard the Earth. What could possibly go wrong? As Reed Richards struggles to hide his true motivations and the Future Foundation reacts to their mentors’ replacements, Doom the Annihilating Conqueror rises! Collects: Fantastic Four (2012) 1-16, 5AU; FF (2012) 1-16; Marvel Now! Point One 1

Vol 5 or 6, depending on who you ask, which is frustrating as a comic fan.

This was a cool hook: For reasons mentioned in secret, it’s time for Mr Fantastic to explore the unknown universe and meet all sorts of cool creatures and features, ultimately culminating in a weird confrontation with Dr Droom. That’s a big spoiler for the story, but it’s hard to not mention it with a cover like that.

The book had a neat hook: due to time dilation mcguffins, the Fantastic Four would leave earth, do their exploration, then be back in only a few minutes. Things being what they are though, the Fantastic Four knew that if they left for even a moment without a replacement team, something would happen that would force them to come back immediately, so they sign up four superheroes to be the “FF”. Not the Fantastic Four, that name is staying with the family, but just “FF”. There’s another series out there that’s included in a hardcover collection, but I didnt read that, I dislike the art in it and honestly I don’t have interest in the team that much.

This is a good series, right up until the last book, which is where the artist from the side series was brought over to close out the Fantastic Four series. I didn’t like the final issue and I’m sad that the original artist wasn’t able to finish the series.

A sidenote, this was the first book that I honestly tried to use the AR features that all the Marvel books had at the time, but the app is delisted and all the content is spread to the winds.

    What a waste.

Frank Castle loses control! A by-the-numbers drug bust is about to take Frank Castle by surprise – and he hates surprises. The horrible fallout threatens to send The Punisher into the heart of darkness, but Castle won’t make that journey alone: A DEA agent is on his trail and attempting to get into his head, but what horrors will she find there, and will she survive the experience? Collecting Punisher Vol. 11 #1-6 (subject to change).

Volume 10 or Volume 11, depending on who you ask, all I know is it’s the last story before marvel switched over to their fancy new legacy numbering system.

This story involves Frank killing someone by throwing a bear trap at their face.

Directed by Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders. With Daveigh Chase, Chris Sanders, Tia Carrere, David Ogden Stiers. A Hawaiian girl adopts an unusual pet who is actually a notorious extra-terrestrial fugitive.

There’s a Lilo & Stitch cinematic universe on Disney+ and I’m dipping my toes right into it. I’ve already this the first movie, but I watched it again to remind me why I loved it so much, it’s one of the few solid science fiction films from Disney, and it combines Polynesian concepts to great effect.

I like the concept but from the publication schedule of this series, it looks like we’re only going to get the four issues that are already published. This is a post apocalyptic story that has some cool story beats, but it just sorta ends with a goofy ass cliffhanger in the fourth issue and it’s been 4 months since that came out.

I’ve noticed this with a few Image series and it’s worrying.

    Spider-Man

In 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, fifteen-year-old Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and became the Amazing Spider-Man! 57 years have passed in the real world since that event – so what would have happened if the same amount of time passed for Peter as well? To celebrate Marvel’s 80th anniversary, Chip Zdarsky and Spider-Man legend Mark Bagley unite to spin a unique Spidey tale – telling an entire history of Spider-Man from beginning to end, set against the key events of the decades through which he lived! Prepare to watch Peter Parker age through 57 years of groundbreaking history – and find out what happens to him, and those he loves the most! Collecting: Spider-Man: Life Story 1-6

Highly entertaining, I feel like there’s about 20 other mini series that could be made by the space between the issues of this series. It was fun to see familiar storylines all merged together to tell the story of the one true Spider-man over 60 years of his life.
