It’s on Netflix now!
This was made back when The Rock was trying his hand at being the heel in movies and hadn’t gone all in on shaving his head. I’m happy he’s bald now, looks much better.
I had forgotten that Karl Urban was in this film and since I love Dredd so much, I was happy to see him here as the guy that shoots stuff. That’s my favorite role for him!
Aliens vs Predator Requiem Uncut
Tags:aliens, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, Predators
As a direct continuation of the previous AvP movie, the big deal with this movie that it was rated R. If you notice that the title of the film is “requiem” (a moarning or gathering for the recently dead) and that lines up with the desire to let people know this is going to be a hard R movie, you get a cookie! The story fits pretty well into the franchise, but problem here though is both the color saturation and how dark everything ended up being. I watched this via Vudu and honestly thought I had accidentally purchased the SD version and not the HD / bluray version. After stopping the movie, verifying I had the right version, I hopped on the net and found a number of people complaining about the same thing on various forums and I think I even remember this being an issue when I originally watched this in the theater. It’s obvious that they were using the darkness to hide some CG sins, and I can’t honestly say that was a bad choice.
One of the better parts is the Pred-alien, what a fantastic creature! And the resolution of the story was absolutely fantastic, movies like these frequently pull their punches, so I’m always impressed when they go the distance. I wish there was some follow up with the stinger scene in the most recent “The Predator” film, other than showing all the Predator tech in a cabinet. How come 10 years later we don’t have laser cannons of our own?

The end of paper tickets for movies
I’m going to admit, this is going to be a whiny post about technology moving forever forward and leaving nostalgia behind. I’ve always enjoyed going to the movies, and I enjoy it even more going alone, watching a movie is definitely not something that requires someone you know to participate in, especially now that the internet has so many people on it, I’m never at a loss when I try to find someone else that’s just watched a movie that just came out, or even just watched a movie that came out 40 years ago that I also just watched.
I’ve tried to keep my movie ticket stubs from my 30 years of going to movies to some limited success, but as of 2018 I’m throwing in the towel. I’ve asked several of the companies that sell tickets, including AMC why they don’t include paper tickets and it usually boils down to the fact that everyone has a PDA on them at all times, and they’re not very likely to lose it since they’re usually several hundred dollars. I have a great book of movie stubs that I’ve frequently gone back to to see how I felt about a movie, but with the advent of paperless ticketing as the only option for movies, I’m finding more and more that I’m having to use my own blog to find the information instead of using a physical book. I love that book, but now I guess I’ll need to import all the movies from the physical pages into my site as pictures and blog posts. This isn’t just for movies too, several of the recent festivals I’ve gone to were digital only as well.
That’s all well and fine and normally I champion progress that results in less paper waste, but there’s something personal about the movie stub that I know I got back in ’98 and can still look at instead of a picture of a QR code or just a blog entry. I’ll always have my book, but it feels like the end of something more important, something more substantial.

The Predator
Tags:Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, The Predator
Fits in with the other Predator movies, for better or worse. There’s some obvious problems with the editing of the film, which might be considered spoilers, so I’ll not go into details, but I do have to wonder: was it the behind the scenes drama where Munn decided to be a moral Judge Dredd or did the film run over budget and reshoots were not possible?
Other than the editing, the soundtrack had great callbacks, the special effects were pretty, and the story wasn’t complete trash. It could have been much worse, but it could have been a bit better too, but that’s just like all the other Predator films.

Found all four issues for $1 each in my LCS’s dollar bin, perfect condition! The story was pretty fun, but at times pretty confusing if you didn’t know what Doom was ultimately going to be up to here.
IIRC, this was back when the whole “Marvel Knights” thing was just taking off in an attempt to save Marvel Comics. Pretty sure it helped, I know that I enjoyed a fair number of the stories that were told in the MK books.

Free with X-Box Gold this month, but it’s not even worth that price. Boring and humorless and completely way too crass about the execution of prisoners, I really have to wonder what type of audience they’re shooting for here? Are there really a lot of Sim City fans that would enjoy building the execution chambers for a double murderer? I uninstalled when they asked me to decorate the death room and place the death machines around the room, it was just too real for me.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Tags:Dolly Parton, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds sing and dance through an inspired tale of the story behind the demise of the real-life Chicken Ranch in the musical comedy, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. When a big TV crusader Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) threatens to expose the Chicken Ranch to public scandal and close it down, Miss Mona (Parton) doesn’t go down without a fight. With the help of Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Reynolds), the two join together to keep it open and find romance along the way. Sing along through this extraordinary story about passion, scandal and romance.
This was the first time I’ve seen this and I’m astonished at how much I enjoyed it, Dolly was downright perfect for this role and Burt played off her so well, I honestly felt they had a perfect on screen chemistry.
Much more nudity than I was expecting for a Dolly/Burt film, but I guess it makes sense considering the movie’s title.
Firefly Season 1
Tags:Firefly, Television, Television Reviews
Watched again because I bought it yet again and gorram it, it was time to watch it again. As time passed, cgi gets better, and all the actors age, it’s getting more and more difficult to revisit the series and not notice how rough around the edges everything is, the interior of the ship is amazing, but the exterior cgi is unfortunate, and damn everyone looks so young. Morena Baccarin is still as beautiful as she was at the time, but Nathan Fillion has definitely matured a fair bit since Firefly.
I wish there had been more, but I”m happy with what we got.

4k on Vudu, it was only $5!
I should not have watched it immediately after watching the entire series in one day though, there’s a definite change in pace and a very obvious upgrade in special effect and cgi. These aren’t complaints mind you, but it just made the difference much more clear and jarring.
There wasn’t anything about this 4k presentation that really jumped out at me.

Released nearly 3 years ago to the day that I started playing it, I swear it was a coincidence, or at least I didn’t know why I picked it up. I seent it on humble bundle or chrono.gg for obscenely cheap, thought maybe I would try it out, but maybe I should check my Steam library before I spent $3 on it.
Low and behold, I’ve owned this since April 2017, it’s nice to get a game out of my unplayed queue after only a year and a half. I really wish I had started this back when I first bought it, I have some complaints about how shallow the gameplay is, but I honestly think that even that shallow game play is a positive with my current game playing style. All of the missions are resolvable within 20-30 minutes, the game automatically saves your progress when you quit out, and you can completely pause the game when you’re doing laundry.
The soundtrack is great the first 200 times I heard the twangy battle music, but after that….well I can see why they included a custom music direction option, so you can insert your own music into the game. Due to a severe case of apathetic laziness I did not partake in this feature, but if it annoys you, there it is.

Watching this in 2018, man what a corny flick with jarring CGI. It came out only a couple years after TRON and it really shows that while they were striving for something good, computer generated images simply weren’t ready to replace miniatures or practical effects. I applaud the effort though and because this movie is amazingly nostalgic for me (I don’t know why, I was two when it originally came out), so I can overlook any visual shortcomings it may have. The practical effects were actually pretty cool, I remember being freaked out by the Beta robot when it was growing it’s face, and Robert Preston stole every scene he was in.
