    Dune

Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender’s Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written.

Melange, or ‘spice’, is the most valuable – and rarest – element in the universe; a drug that does everything from increasing a person’s life-span to making intersteller travel possible. And it can only be found on a single planet: the inhospitable desert world Arrakis.

Whoever controls Arrakis controls the spice. And whoever controls the spice controls the universe.

When the Emperor transfers stewardship of Arrakis from the noble House Harkonnen to House Atreides, the Harkonnens fight back, murdering Duke Leto Atreides. Paul, his son, and Lady Jessica, his concubine, flee into the desert. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis’ second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands.

In order to avenge his father and retake Arrakis from the Harkonnens, Paul must earn the trust of the Fremen and lead a tiny army against the innumerable forces aligned against them.

And his journey will change the universe.

I went in thinking this was going to be a rough book to really get into, but other than keeping track of who was who with all their silly names, this was an enjoyable story that kinda just ends on a cliff hanger, much like the movie did. Now I need to read the 100 page appendix that comes after the main story, which from my brief skimming looks to be a story of the ecology of Arrakis and how exactly a desert planet with no greenery is capable of sustaining human life for so long.

    The Jungle Book

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, James Algar, Jack Kinney. With Phil Harris, Sebastian Cabot, Louis Prima, Bruce Reitherman. Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear have a difficult time trying to convince a boy to leave the jungle for human civilization.

After a discussion about the live action remakes that Disney has been doing, my wife told me that she hadn’t seen the new Jungle book one yet, and in fact didn’t remember much about the original animated version either, so here we are. It’s a fun movie that has some incredibly problematic portions, with white guys doing their best black man impressions whilst voicing monkeys that kidnapped our hero. there’s other essays out there that go much further into how problematic that is, so all I’ll say is oof, maybe this type of thing is why Disney is keen on doing new versions of old films?

If you’re able to get past the in your face racism, this is a fantastic movie with catchy tunes.

    Madness in the Method

Directed by Jason Mewes. With Jason Mewes, Vinnie Jones, Jaime Camil, Gina Carano. Jason Mewes, attempting method acting in order to gain more respect for himself in Hollywood, slowly descends into madness.

Jason Mewes Directed and starred in this and I need more of this in my life. Sure there’s a low budget flair here, but this film has heart and plays with the idea of stardom and being locked into a niche role, much like JCVD did for Jean-Claude van Damme.
