Fun movie about parents being unable to come to terms with their kids growing up. John Cena is in it, and he’s hilarious?

Defunctland mentioned this show in one of their episodes, along with the fact that there was a movie made after the wrap of the show. It’s not an award winning movie, but it’s a fun story that I slept through a fair bit of. My wife was dutifully entertained, as she was a fan of the original show when it was on air. One thing that interested me for the 20 or 30 minutes I was awake for, but the eldest of the three kids is played by Isabela Moner, who later went to to star in Transformers: Last Knight.

If you’ve seen any of the other purge films, you’ve seen this one, for better or worse. There’s some silly back plots about a shady character who looks remarkably like Sean Spicer, but you can safely ignore those plot points, as they’re just there to make you feel like you’re not watching violence / torture porn.

Another good book from Casey Calouette, it was pretty interesting to see two sides of the same battle, one from orbit in spaceships that are only just barely flying, and one from the ground where tanks are pounding away at each other. It’s been about three years since this book came out, the second in a series, and while I understand the author is busy with life, it would be great if he could write me some sequels. I do recognize that he has had several other books come out and has been dealing with recovering from cancer treatment, so I guess I’ll have to be happy with reading absolutely everything else this guy has written. I’m series, he’s among my favorite authors at this point, only two books in!
Heads up, if you sign up for his email list on his website you’ll get a free book. You’ll also get a free copy of the book if you go to amazon.com and click “give me the free copy“. No idea if you need to be a Prime member or not for the amazon version of the free book.

Borderlands The PreSequel
Tags:Borderlands, Game Of The Year 2018, Game Reviews, Gaming
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a new role-playing shooter in the critically acclaimed Borderlands series. Play as four all-new character classes while carving a path of destructive mayhem across Pandora’s never-before-seen low-gravity moonscapes with all new moves, weapons, and vehicles!
I give up on this game. I got about half way through and just lost all will to even load it up, kept it on the top of the “To Play” pile and just said “ugh” every time I saw it there. Perhaps it’s just more of the same from Borderlands 2, maybe it was the oxygen mechanic, maybe it was the setting, or maybe it was the characters. I loved ZER0 from the original sequel and there wasn’t really anyone that played the same in the Presequel.
Also, god damn I hated that oxygen mechanic where I was always running around trying to find air. I don’t need that kind of anxiety in my space shooters!

The true story of Hollywood’s greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy, is brought to the big screen for the first time. Starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the legendary movie icons, Stan & Ollie is the heart-warming story of what would become the pair’s triumphant farewell tour.
With their golden era long behind them, the pair embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) – a formidable double act in their own right – the pair’s love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public.

What a weird little story. I enjoyed it, if only because Frank Castle was so adorably grumpy that he was getting wrapped into mystical stuff again. After all, every time he’s brushed up against magic it’s gone poorly for him!
They Shall Not Grow Old

On the centenary of the end of First World War, Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) presents the World Premiere of an extraordinary new work showing the Great War as you have never seen it.
This unique film brings into high definition the human face of the First World War as part of a special London Film Festival presentation alongside a live Q&A with director Peter Jackson hosted by Mark Kermode.
Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage which is more than a 100-years old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there. Driven by a personal interest in the First World War, Jackson set out to bring to life the day-to-day experience of its soldiers. After months immersed in the BBC and Imperial War Museums’ archives, narratives and strategies on how to tell this story began to emerge for Jackson. Using the voices of the men involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line; their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate; slept and formed friendships, as well what their lives were like away from the trenches during their periods of downtime.
Jackson and his team have used cutting edge techniques to make the images of a hundred years ago appear as if they were shot yesterday. The transformation from black and white footage to colourised footage can be seen throughout the film revealing never before seen details. Reaching into the mists of time, Jackson aims to give these men voices, investigate the hopes and fears of the veterans, the humility and humanity that represented a generation changed forever by a global war.
The film can be seen in both 2D and 3D in selected cinemas. Check your local listing for full details.
Co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW and Imperial War Museums in association with the BBC. Produced by WingNut Films and Executive Produced by House Productions. Special thanks to Matthew & Sian Westerman with additional support from The Taylor Family Foundation, The Moondance Foundation, Welsh Government, Scottish Government, British Council, Tim Bunting, Jacqueline & Richard Worswick and one anonymous donor.

Next Gen
Tags:Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
Next Gen turned out to be much more fun than I was expecting it to, afterall, Netflix is getting a reputation for having low quality content, but rumor has it they spent about $30 million on this movie, and every penny of it shows. It’s a familiar story in which a kid finds a mcguffin that she misuses for her own ends, then finds out that this mcguffin is more than she thought it was and uses to save the city/planet/galaxy. While it’s familiar, it’s also comforting with some spectacular visuals, an interesting soundtrack, and great VO work by very talented people.
Check it out, it’s streaming on netflix now.

Half the problems in this movie wouldn’t have been problems if Peter Panning wasn’t such a bad parent. Honestly, the first quarter of the movie is a lesson in how poorly he was raising his kids! I mean, sure the problems were all resolved with imagination, flying, and murder, but my point stands.
Damage Control 1989 I
Tags:Book Reviews, Comic Books
My recent adventure at Megacon 2018 netted a few “new to me” comic books, the first mini series for Damage Control was the first purchase. It’s written by Dwayne McDuffie, which was a surprise to me, I didn’t know he was doing work this far back in 1989, though I guess it makes sense, he would have been in his late 20’s then. As always with McDuffie, the stories are fun to read and of the four issues, two of them are related to bigger things going on in the Marvel Universe, so while there’s meta story through the four issues, they’re all still a blast.

Solo A Star Wars Story
Tags:Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, Star Wars
I still think that this movie is among the best of the Star Wars movies that Disney has released, it’s a shame that they’ve decided to slow down movie production due to the response to both Solo and The Last Jedi. The stench of Episode 8 is killing our hopes for a continuation of that amazing third act reveal, something that I think could have pushed the Star Wars movies further than they’ve gone in the past. Guess we’re going to just end up with more “safe” movies that are essentially remakes of the original trilogy.
The 4k/HDR and special features on the disk were great, especially the deleted scenes. I’m shocked that there’s no behind the scenes content with the original directors (Phil Lord and Chris Miller), but this is likely due to Disney not wanting to muddy the waters too much and confuse the casual fans.
