So Netflix CAN make a good comic book show? This was the best comic book story they’ve done yet, I have some nit picky things to say about it, but I was entertained right up to the very last second of the very last episode, normally I’m checking out around 2/3 of the way through and just watching the rest to see what they’re setting up for the next season.

I do wonder though, how does DD get around?  Uber?

    My Name Is Bruce

Mistaken for his character Ash from the ‘Evil Dead’ trilogy, Bruce Campbell is forced to fight a real monster in a small Oregon town.

Bruce Campbell has always seemed like a boorish delight, I’ve never met him personally, but I feel like he’d be a hoot to hang out, have some drinks, and fight the undead with. All his roles have a pretty standard feel to them and this film is no different, so if you like him, this is a great movie to check out.

    Curse Words TPBs 1 & 2

    615y7ApOWLL Curse Words TPBs 1 & 261dqYjG2VZL Curse Words TPBs 1 & 2

A wizard has appeared in present-day New York! His name is Wizord, and he’s here to save us all from dark magical forces bent on our destruction. He’s the best wizard of all time! Or…he’s not, and he’s lying to everyone, and secretly is the dark magical force, but wants to hang out in our world for a while because it’s so much nicer than the hellhole he comes from. Secrets, and spells, and talking koalas—CURSE WORDS is a gonzo dark fantasy from CHARLES SOULE (Daredevil, Letter 44, Star Wars) and RYAN BROWNE (GOD HATES ASTRONAUTS).

Image Comics has this great program named “Image Firsts” in which they reprint first issues of books that are about to go to TPB or are doing well enough that they think they can grab a larger audience by practically giving away the first issue. It’s a clever idea that Marvel is also doing with their “True Believer” books, but I’ve actually not found anything that was of interest to me yet from all the Marvel $1 comics, yet with the Image ones, I think I’m up to 5 or 6 different series that I would have never tried that I think I’m going to buy collections of.

The first that I’ve bought from is Curse Words, which has a familiar story of someone being sent somewhere to destroy a place or person, only to fall in love with said place/person and defending it against the powers that sent them there in the first place. What makes this particular story unique is that there’s a talking koalas named Margaret, there’s a great backstory and the main story moves in a pretty rapid pace, no filler content here! Another reason is that these trades were pretty cheap, just $10 each!

    Train to Busan

A1ObY5LTX0L. RI SX300 Train to Busan

While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.

This movie has been on my watchlist for about as long as it’s been on Netflix, but I’ve never found the time to sit down and watch it, primarily due to the subtitles. Sure it looks like a fun movie, but it’s rare that I’m able to focus 100% of my attention on the screen to catch every word that goes up, but this last weekend Hurrican Michael rolled through and knocked out power for nearly everyone in my city, about 300k homes completely without power. It really sucked, but I had a tablet and a hotspot on my phone…well I had a hot spot after they put up a couple more Verizon towers, the original ones were knocked over and stomped on by the storm. So day two, I was able to watch a movie or two on my newish kindle fire, which was surprising to me. Back when I got my first tablet it could do books for about 14 hours of screen time and movies for about 2, but apparently this new tech gives me about 8 hours of movies and damn near two weeks of reading books on the kindle app.

All that’s to say, this movie was better than I was assuming it was going to be. Sure, there’s a necessary level of camp involved in any zombie story, but they never went over the line to be a comedy, and the final scene in the train tunnel was a damn tear jerker.

Air-headed high school cheerleader Buffy reluctantly accepts her destiny – to become her generation’s warrior in the never-ending war against vampires! Campy fun, with Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens.

I’m not sure how I was able to get through the entire TV series without watching the movie. I was not expecting this level of camp, nor the low budget feel to the effects and sets, though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering the premise.

    The TV show was better.

This series continues to be one of the smartest and most entertaining sexual education comedy animated series I’ve ever seen. If you’ve ever gone through puberty, you’ll appreciate about 90% of the jokes here, the other 10% are likely gender dependent or orientation dependent that may strike a stronger cord for you than they did for me.

    The Boys

250px The Boys Volume One The Boys

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, THE BOYS centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. THE BOYS is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes.

As kids, they escaped a UFO death cult. Now, two adult brothers seek answers after an old videotape surfaces and brings them back to where they began.

Not all Lovecraftian movies rise to this level, the list is pretty short of end of days movies that I would suggest that have a taste of Cthulhu in them.

This is one of them. Mind breakingly horrifying at times and well worth your time if you want to get spooked. It might have helped that I was watching this in a city with no power, my windows open in a pitch black house with only the sound of the wind through the leaves outside, but man there was something spooky about this movie that really spooked me into saying “spook” too many times.

    Snow Crash

    51yI5lXG7IL Snow Crash

One of Time’s 100 best English-language novels • A mind-altering romp through a future America so bizarre, so outrageous, you’ll recognize it immediately. Only once in a great while does a writer come along who defies comparison—a writer so original he redefines the way we look at the world. Neal Stephenson is such a writer and Snow Crash is such a novel, weaving virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility to bring us the gigathriller of the information age. In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo’s CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he’s a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that’s striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse.

What an absolutely bonkers story. There’s some great concepts here, but a whole lot of stinkers as well. The Mary Sue is strong with this story as well, with a character literally named “Hero Protagonist” and some deep thought on the operating systems of our brains. Add in a completely silly mafia pizza situation and some incredibly naive concepts of government, it’s a fun read right up to the last chapter which sorta just ends without any kind of real closure. I feel this story could have gone a few more chapters to wrap everything up, but instead we got a “and then everyone was done, The End” type of ending.

43817903 678678685835293 4735385620627587072 n 819x1024 Aladdin“Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. “Aladdin” stars Will Smith as the larger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud as the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards. I honestly cannot tell you why I chose this movie to try out the (new to me) Tubi app on my Roku, but this is the movie I chose and man am I happy I did.  Tubi itself is an ok service, but it has several of the problems that I associate with first generation streaming apps: weird movie choices, out of sync audio, ads that run at weird times (and 3 seconds of the previous scene being incorrectly chopped off, then plays after the ad), washed out images, and an UI that’s not terrible but not great.  I look forward to what they end up with in the future though, they seem to be moving the right direction.  One shockingly positive thing I noted was that they ran a commercial for a local mexican that I’ve been to many times, which was surprising on multiple levels, but it was great to see different ads every ad break and not the same one three times in a row.

As for the movie itself, boy howdy was it a humdinger of an experience.  It’s the story of four freshmen in highschool being played by 18-20 year olds, which if you’ve ever met both a 14 year old and an 18 year old, there’s a world of difference, not that it matters in this case because they’re so excited to be a part of this new high school experience.  It’s never addressed, but the school they’re going to has security in nearly every scene, so I can only assume it’s a cesspool of dangerous criminals, something that’s further re-enforced by the thinly veiled Barbi stand in bully, who’s father is the principal of the school.  It’s later revealed that they live in a multistoried mansion on what I can only assume is an expansive piece of real estate, worth several million dollars.  How he affords all this on a high school principal salary can be explained partially by the amount of armed security on the campus, I’m pretty sure he’s getting some sizable kickbacks from the contractors handling the detail.  There’s some odd MTV participation, and while I see no indication they were actually involved in the creation of the movie itself, I guess it’s a buzzworthy name that’s easy to drop to highschoolers. Mixed in with all this is a weird child love story with a younger brother and a much much younger sister, all wrapped up with a song / music video that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the movie, either in tone or substance.

This was not a good movie to me, a 38 year old white guy typing out movie reviews from the safety of his couch.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school-the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year-before she begins high school.

This was an exercise in anxiety and self loathing that was great to experience once, but man I did not know what kind of film I was getting myself into. Was it going to have a sudden twist that would ruin it? It’s directed by that one guy that does a stand up routine that’s completely off the walls in every good way, so maybe it’ll have that twist? Was that the twist? Is there no twist? What’s going to happen when she’s alone?

Such a great film that I suggest you check out, but only if you were a 13 year old at any point in your life.

    Batman White Knight

    51ETolUrx L Batman: White Knight

The impossible has happened: The Joker has become…sane. Batman: White Knight follows the man now known as Jack Napier as he embarks on a quest to heal the city he once terrorized. After reconciling with his long-suffering partner, Harley Quinn, he sets in motion a carefully plotted campaign to discredit the one person whom he views as Gotham City’s true enemy: Batman. His crusade exposes a decades-long history of corruption within the Gotham City Police Department and transforms Napier into a city councilman and civic hero. But when the sins of his past return to threaten everything that he has accomplished, the distinctions between savior and destroyer begin to break down for both The Joker and Batman alike-and with them any hope for Gotham’s future. Writer and artist Sean Murphy delivers an extraordinary examination of comics’ greatest antagonists in Batman: White Knight, exploring justice, corruption, activism and the darkest depths of mental illness. Collecting the acclaimed eight-issue miniseries, this stunning graphic novel also marks the debut of the DC Black Label imprint, which features classic DC characters in all-new, standalone stories written and illustrated by world-class authors and artists.

Absolutely fantastic story, I missed it when it was drip fed as single issues, and I’m happy that I was able to read it all at once. The art and the story are on the level of The Dark Knight Returns, it’s that good! There’s some very good twists here with characters that make complete sense, and I really hope they get incorporated back to the DCU, but considering how big of a mess that whole universe is in right now, I’m not holding my breath.

Tom Hardy stars as the lethal protector and anti-hero Venom – one of Marvel’s most enigmatic and complex characters.

This wasn’t the venom I knew from the comic books, but some weird combination of The Odd Couple, The Darkness, and Forest Gump. Considering what Sony’s done to the other Spider-man related movies, I’m willing to consider this as a goof movie, just not a great movie, and absolutely mess of an MCU movie.  Luckily this isn’t a “proper” MCU movie, but a “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Movies” that will soon include Silver Sable, Black Cat, and more Venom movies. Maybe.  Depends on if Tom Hardy really takes to heart some of the criticisms that are heading his way for how weird this movie turned out being.

The cast of this movie, boy howdy, so many big names in some absolutely fantastic performances. I love the feel of the movie, how it’s both a small movie in scope (dude wants to date a girl, but he’s already dating someone!) but so large as well (seven deadly exes want to fight!).
