The Giant Mimr by Axel Sauerwald

    Sky High

Directed by Mike Mitchell. With Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Michael Angarano, Danielle Panabaker. Set in an era where superheroes are commonly known and accepted, young William Stronghold, the son of the Commander and Jetstream, tries to find a balance between being a normal teenager and an extraordinary being.

I saw this back when it came out in 2005 and hadn’t thought of it for even a moment until someone mentioned that Bruce Campbell was in it and Kevin Heffernan was a bus driver in it and I didn’t remember that at all, so decided to watch it again. I had forgotten how delightfully cheesy it is, and I’m not sure I even knew who Danielle Panabaker was, but she certainly was cute as a button back then, wasn’t she?

    Spontaneous

Directed by Brian Duffield. With Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Yvonne Orji, Hayley Law. Get ready for the outrageous coming-of-age love story about growing up…and blowing up. When students in their school begin exploding (literally), seniors Mara and Dylan struggle to survive in a world where each moment may be their last.

This is a much different movie than the humorous trailer made me believe, not for the worse, just different. It’s a good film and I’m growing to be a fan of Katherine Langford. I’m not happy that a few things are never fully fleshed out and some of the story choices just don’t make sense, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

  • Jabberwocky

Directed by Terry Gilliam. With Michael Palin, Harry H. Corbett, John Le Mesurier, Warren Mitchell. A young peasant, with no interest in adventure or fortune, is mistaken as the kingdom’s only hope when a horrible monster threatens the countryside.

If you were to say “golly this looks an off brand Monty Python and the Holy Grail” you’d only be half wrong, as Michael Palin was actually in BOTH of the films. Jabberwocky could actually serve as a less funny, but more gritty sequel to “Holy Grail” and while I wish I could suggest it, I honestly can’t. The version I watched was on Amazon Prime and had a title card saying that it had been restored by the BFI and the George Lucas Family, so obviously someone out there feels it has artistic merit, but I struggled to make it to the end of the film.

    News of the World

Directed by Paul Greengrass. With Tom Hanks, Helena Zengel, Tom Astor, Travis Johnson. A Civil War veteran agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.

A great movie right up till the ending which I was not happy with. I can see how they got to where they went with the story, but I felt gross about the decisions that were made.

    Kim’s Convenience

With Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Andrea Bang, Simu Liu. The misadventures of a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store.

Four seasons in a single weekend, I started watching it to have something on in the background, but then something funny happened, I got pulled into the show and started caring about the characters, all of which had significant character development, more than I think I’ve ever seen in a show like this. First impressions is that it’s another situational comedy, but it’s a much deeper and dramatic series than I initially thought it was going to be. There was a point in season three that I even put down the laptop and just watched the show. When I was done with the fourth season I was sad that I had no more to watch, but then found out that they’re already half way done with season 5, so now I have those to watch, just as soon as I find where they’re streaming.

    Mage Against the Machine

    Harry Potter meets The Terminator.

I trimmed off the rest of the description, there were spoilers in it that would make you regret reading the description of the book!

The synopsis of “harry potter meets the terminator” is the best description I could possibly suggest. There’s legitimately 3 or 4 chapters of world building that made me wonder which world being described was going to to be the real one, with some obvious hints which it was going to be. When that resolution actually game through though…I was shocked about how deeply I felt it worked and how crazy it was not no one had really gone all out like Shaun Barger did with Mage Against The Machine.

If you’re a fan of The Magicians, Harry Potter, Terminator, or any AI takes over the world stories, this is a unique pairing that really did it for me.

    Braveheart

Directed by Mel Gibson. With Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan, Angus Macfadyen. Scottish warrior William Wallace leads his countrymen in a rebellion to free his homeland from the tyranny of King Edward I of England.

It’s been years and years since I’ve seen it, but I think I found the UHD for $5 through fanflicks, so I watched it again. It’s a bloody, brutal film with a significant amount of body horror and one scene with some romance, but it’s mostly about chopping off limbs and being as dirty and nasty as possible. I enjoyed it despite how gross everyone looked in the film, but that was likely more about the soundtrack than anything else.
