Days of Thunder

Directed by Tony Scott. With Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid. A young hot-shot stock car driver gets his chance to compete at the top level.

I bought this from Vudu in a recent 3/$15 UHD sale they had, and while the 5.1 surround sound is exactly as amazing as I had hoped, the picture was insanely grainy. The movie poster above works as a good example of the kind of visual noise that was present through the entire film, often times getting so bad it was downright distracting.

As a movie, Days of Thunder still holds up after 30 years, the story is essentially the same one that Top Gun did better, but only just barely.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. With Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson. A rescue crew investigates a spaceship that disappeared into a black hole and has now returned…with someone or something new on-board.

A by the numbers rescue operation very quickly goes off the rails, but sadly this movie doesn’t hold up to the memories that I had of it. The basic premise still holds strong and the acting is fantastic, but there’s some 90’s cheese in there that I don’t appreciate any more. Smoking on a spaceship? Only one person catches the Latin language “save me” and he’s on the ship? No one back on earth didn’t know this? oooor did they and decided to just keep everyone in the dark? I think there’s a discussion to be had for where the engine designer got his ideas from, perhaps the warp reached out to him?

The highlight of the film was seeing Lawrence Fishburne in a whibble wobble chair on the bridge of his ship.

Alien The Original Screenplay

In 1976, Twentieth Century Fox bought a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon entitled Star Beast. Three years later with Ridley Scott at the helm, Alien was unleashed on unsuspecting filmgoers. En route to back to Earth, the crew of the starship Snark intercepts an alien transmission. Their investigation leads them to a desolate planetoid, a crashed alien spacecraft, and a pyramidic structure of unknown origin. Then the terror begins…

In the forward of book editor Randy Stradley makes a point to say that they had to go back to the drawing board a few times because of how difficult it was to forget what was actually made by the creative minds (Moebius, Giger) after the script was purchased and development started on the movie itself. While I applaud those efforts, I still feel like this book is too close to the movie that ended up on film for me to suggest it for anyone. It has great art and there’s some very very minor differences from the movie, but at the end of the day, it’s the same script with some names and genders changed.

That being said, it’ll look great up on my shelf next to the Alien3 Original Screenplay adaption, which was a much different, more notable, and much more enjoyable.
