Final Reminder: Game / Movie / Book / Television of the Year!

I’m going to be pulling the Best of the Year stats tomorrow, so if you want your opinion counted, get to voting!

It’s time to decide on the Best of 2020!

Earlier this year I completely redid the site store, turning it from a useless page that no one used to a page that showcases all the reviews that are posted to MCS, this has done a couple things that are worth mentioning:

1 – I don’t have to make a custom template page for each year’s voting, that was always a headache to figure out.

2 – The ability to show YOU, the USER, what you haven’t voted on yet, to make it easier to get YOU, the USER to vote!

3 – Historical data, which no one cares about, but it’s easy now to see what reviews were done in a specific year, for a specific category.  It’s interesting to me at least.

My point is though: get to voting!

    We Were Here

An abandoned castle, the only possession you have left is a walkie-talkie with a familiar voice on the other end. Can the two of you find your way out in time?We Were Here is the pilot episode in a series of cooperative standalone puzzle adventures. Two players are trapped inside an abandoned castle, with Player One confined to a small secluded part of the castle as Player Two roams the halls trying to find Player One. Every room challenges your wits and ability to communicate clearly, using only your voice. Are you ready to find out how well you and your friends work together? If you like living on the edge, try playing it with a complete stranger!

I tried playing it, but it requires two live players to play anything at all. On top of that, both of them have to have their microphones turned on AND they need to speak the same language.

Maybe I can convince my wife to try it out one day, but this is not that day.

    The Wizard of Oz

Directed by Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Mervyn LeRoy. With Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr. Dorothy Gale is swept away from a farm in Kansas to a magical land of Oz in a tornado and embarks on a quest with her new friends to see the Wizard who can help her return home to Kansas and help her friends as well.

I was lazing about on my couch as my roku 4k player scrolled through it’s city scape screensaver and I saw one of the buildboard ads for HBO Max, featuring The Wizard of Oz. It’s been years since I’ve seen it and I needed to get HBO Max installed so I could watch the new WW84 movie (which turned out to be perfectly meh), but by clicking on the ad, they got me to install the app (what a chore! had to hand type everything in, no phone login!), but immediately after the install, The WOZ started right up, it was an alarmingly seemless series of events.

This was one of my mom’s favorite movies, so I decided to stick around and watch the whole thing. It wasn’t in 4k (no much on HBO Max is) though I know there’s a 4k treatment for it out there. Maybe in a few years I can get the 4k disk and give it a go, but this simple HD version of the film still impressed, and I’m happy I stuck around to watch the entire thing.

    The Midnight Sky

Directed by George Clooney. With George Clooney, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Caoilinn Springall. This post-apocalyptic tale follows Augustine, a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.

I guessed what was going to happen 5 minutes in, but that didn’t really detract from the rest of the movie. It was good, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it to anyone specifically. The soundtrack for it however, it utterly amazing and is likely going to end up in heavy rotation at my house.

The outer space scenes outside of the spaceship were among the best I’ve seen in 4k, so if you want something to show people what your new 4k setup can do, this would be a good choice to start with.

    The Hunt

Directed by Craig Zobel. With Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Ike Barinholtz, Wayne Duvall. Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen – for a very specific purpose – The Hunt.

Betty Gilpin is an absolute treasure in this film and is honestly the only thing that keeps it from sinking into pure b-movie bullshit. It’s mostly just her acting abilities, but the role itself is written in a way that rejects the corny polemic storyline that’s going on in the background of her story of just wanting to have a smoke and go home.

I did enjoy the cornucopia scene, I think they deliberately make it initially feel like the Hunger Games, just to put you in the right frame of mind, along with a few guest star appearances that really tickled my fancy.

    Skylines

Directed by Liam O’Donnell. With Lindsey Morgan, Rhona Mitra, James Cosmo, Alexander Siddig. When a virus threatens to turn the now earth-dwelling friendly alien hybrids against humans, Captain Rose Corley must lead a team of elite mercenaries on a mission to the alien world in order to save what’s left of humanity.

The third film in an unlikely trilogy of films, the first of which was theatrically released, but the second went straight to VOD, I dont’ think they even pressed it to plastic. Surprisingly though, the second of the two was the stronger of the films and did more with the world they built than the first one did. It’s obvious someone with money agrees with that opinion, because here we are with a third film that’s just a strong as the second one with appearances by Alexander Siddig (star trek: DS9, Game of thrones), Rhona Mitra (The Last Ship, Underworld), and staring Lindsey Morgan, who I best know from The 100 and loved her dearly from my time watching that show. It’s a fun movie that never struggles with the idea it should take itself seriously and there’s no need to catch up on the previous films as there’s a convenient “the world till now” synopsis right at the beginning.

    Downhill

Directed by Nat Faxon, Jim Rash. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, Zach Woods, Zoe Chao. Barely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other.

A remake of a better film (Force Majeure) this one stars two of America’s most known and best recognized comedians in a film that doesn’t seem it intends to be a film about funny people. My problem is I’m nearly completely unable to take either Julia Louis-Dreyfus nor Will Ferell seriously, which this story really does demand that the actors not be mugging for the camera in every scene and that they have a certain amount of anonymity that these two simply don’t have. They definitely didn’t play anything up for laughs, but it’s hard to break away from the expectation that they were going to start making SNL level jokes or start going down the ski hills backwards.

There’s some big changes here too, which I don’t think service the story very well at all. In the original, the father does straight up abandon his family, but it’s clear that there’s room for interpretation in his actions for what his intent was, even if he didn’t know himself. In this English remake, it’s obvious that the father is out for himself and the wife turns into a straight up horror show of uncomfortable emotions.

Had I never seen the original, this remake would get a “meh” from me, but having seen the superior film, the remake gets a solid “boo” for both it’s casting choices and story changes.

The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud

Directed by Martin Owen. With Scott Adkins, John Hannah, Lashana Lynch, Elliot James Langridge. A space cruiser crashes on a planet that is home to an intergalactic prison.

It’s about a girl that gets sucked into a video game and has to fight her way out. You may say to yourself, golly that sure does sound like the recent “Jumanji” films that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars in, and you’d be completely right about that! It’s just like that, just different, and in some ways, better! There’s no one here like The Rock where he’s The Rock playing The Rock in a Rock video game, and several of the fight scenes here in Max Cloud actually have legitimate fighting game feels to them.

There are a few familiar actors, but I don’t spoil it too much for you when I say that the famous people aren’t the primary draw, it’s the main two characters that I like the best.

    Tully

Directed by Jason Reitman. With Charlize Theron, Mackenzie Davis, Ron Livingston, Asher Miles Fallica. A struggling mother of three forms an unexpected bond with the night nanny hired to help with her newborn baby.

It’s a good film, but difficult for me to watch on multiple levels. I’ve never done well with cringy / awkward scenes in films, and there’s a lot to be said for Charlize Theron’s ability to make me completely uncomfortable in a few scenes in Tully. She deserves an award for this performance in fact!

    Soul

Directed by Pete Docter, Kemp Powers. With Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House. A musician who has lost his passion for music is transported out of his body and must find his way back with the help of an infant soul learning about herself.

In many ways this is not a kid’s film and I mean that in the best of ways. “Soul” best serves as an emotional sequel to “Inside Out”, with a dash of “Oh, God!” and “Freaky Friday“. It’s a Pixar film, so you know that at some point you’re going to be crying like a little baby, so just be ready for the emotional dominos to be set up, then expertly knocked down.

As a side note with no spoilers, if you’re aware of Disney’s massive push to have their content consumed by Chinese citizens, you’ll see a few items here to give their communist friends some content to enjoy.

Currently streaming on Disney+ in 4k/hdr.
