The trailer gave me strong Langoliers vibes, though we quickly find out the source of horror that everyone’s running from and it’s thankfully nothing to do with time travel. I’ve been avoiding the show because it looked like it was going to be a subtitled mess that like most subtitled movies would required 100% of your attention at all times, but they made the curious choice to redub everyone in the series, even the characters that originally spoke English. It’s high drama, at times just for drama’s sake, with characters that have drama coming out of every pore of their existence, and it gets dramatically exhausting at times, I would hope that if the end of everything was nipping at my heels that I would be able to work better with the people in the same airplane as me.

There’s enough here to warrant a recommendation, but only just barely, just know going in that it’s a series that whips itself into a frenzy.

I watched two seasons of this over the weekend. It’s a standard “we judge a team of 10 people to make one feel shitty about their life choices and force them off the show” format, but it’s relatively positive for the most part and results in some rather fantastic pieces of art. The second season is much more emotional than the first one, so get ready for some tears if you blow through the series like I did.

Are you familiar with Transformers? Are you familiar with Lindsay Ellis, youtube superstar? Did you know she loves the Transformers?

If you didn’t, well you should know this, and know that she’s intentionally doing a quasi fan fiction / alternative universe story that sorta looks like Transformers, but is completely it’s own thing. I appreciate what she’s doing here and I’ll pick up the sequels that are obviously coming, but I do hope that she gets her writing up to the same level of quality that her youtube videos have been for the last couple years. That’s not to say this was a bad book, but it did take me a few chapters to decide that I was going to stick with it, that first third of the book is pretty rough. It’s a good first outing though for any author, it’s hard for me to see the obvious great work she does in video and realize that yeah, she’s a brand new writer in the science fiction realm and that it’s obvious that not everyone’s first book is going to be a complete homerun.

I will say I was somewhat put off by the sub/dom sexual relationships between the humans and robots. Maybe that can be explained away, but I’m not really sure where that stuff was going and it made me feel weird.

It’s the Gooneys, but in Hawai’i, with beautiful scenery, a heartfelt story, and a satisfying conclusion, even if it is a bit too spiritual for my tastes.
