Directed by Joel Schumacher. With Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, Uma Thurman. Batman and Robin try to keep their relationship together even as they must stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing Gotham City.

This is sadly where the franchise officially jumps the shark but includes some of the best one liners from comic movies, even to this day, most of them by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze:

“My heart has grown cold to your pleas of mercy.”
“the iceman cometh!”
“What killed the dinosaurs? the ice age!”
batman & robin on ice skates with hokey sticks
batman & robin surfing on rocket doors
oh right, mr freeze had a rocket for some reason
robin saying “cowabunga”
“stay cool bird boy”
bane is just a science experiment instead of a tactical genius?
pretty sure that mad scientist is lionel luthor
only way to be sexy in the bat universe is to die (catwoman / poison ivy)
bane as driver of car (driving ms ivy instead of driving mr daisy?)
batman forever card, never leave home without it, which is a dated reference to a credit card
rubber lips are immune to your charms!

Sadly, as a follow up and ultimately final movie in the franchise, it wasn’t what fans of the prior three films were looking for and didn’t treat the source material with much respect. However, if you were to watch Batman ’66, then watch Batman & Robin, you’d have a perfect set of two movies that feel connected and work pretty well.

Directed by Shawn Levy. With Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Ricky Gervais, Dick Van Dyke. A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc.

I somehow skipped this entire franchise and as I’m desperate to watch something ‘new’ on DisneyPlus, I figured I’d give it a go. I also adore Robin Williams and while he’s not the main role for this movie, he is at the heart of the film. Additionally, the “Robin’s Wish” documentary mentioned the third film was were he started to notice issues with his memory and temperament, and that his wife was fully involved in trying to figure out what was going on with him. I naturally had a morbid curiosity about seeing if there was anything noticeable about his acting in the three films, but ended up enjoying this first one more than I thought I was going to, it has real heart and made me feel emotions, always a hallmark of a well make film imho.

I also discovered that Eva Mendes is retired from acting when I watched this, which made me sad, she was fantastic in nearly everything I’ve seen her in, but good for her!
