    The Way of the Dragon

Directed by Bruce Lee. With Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Nora Miao, Ping-Ou Wei. A man visits his relatives at their restaurant in Italy and has to help them defend against brutal gangsters harassing them.

Did they actually film in the colloseum? That’s pretty cool! I started watching this because Chuck Norris was billed as being in it, and I had just watched his “Missing In Action” film. It’s a good movie without him, which is good, cause Norris doesn’t show up until the very end looking very young and without a beard, but his role was fantastic regardless. This wasn’t a Norris film though, Bruce Lee gets top billing and is absolutely amazing.

I originally found the movie on justwatch where it said it was streaming on Pluto.tv, but boy howdy that version of the movie was absolutely garbage. It looked like it was a hand cammed version of the film with dubs by the local A/V club, with jittering and smearing of the image, so I decided to get the criterion collection version, which ended up being the best choice here, you’ll never go wrong with a Criterion version of a film.

    The Mitchells vs the Machines

Directed by Michael Rianda, Jeff Rowe. With Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Michael Rianda. A quirky, dysfunctional family’s road trip is upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity’s unlikeliest last hope.

I’m assuming this is the same development team that did Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse, Lorde and Miller have executive credits and that feeling that you’re watching something special is ever present. The film was originally named “Connected” and was going to be released in theaters, but we know this last year has been an absolute shit-show in terms of movies actually making it to the big screen.

Maybe one day we can have a year of catchup movies where all the films we would have loved to see on the silver screen get their time to shine, “The Mitchells vs the Machines” would certainly be an amazing film to see with a group of 200 people.

    Gattaca

Directed by Andrew Niccol. With Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Gore Vidal. A genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel.

I remember seeing this film in the movie theaters in 1997 and being utterly disappointed in it because there was literally no spaceships in the film, despite all the trailers saying he was trying to get on a spaceship. 25 years later, I can see that the film wasn’t about spaceships nor the actual desire to get to space, but is more about the lengths that people go to when they’re told “no”.

I’m still upset about the lack of spaceships, but now find it hilarious that the one small bit of the ship that they DO show, it involves the characters getting into their launch seats whilst wearing their sunday best.
