The first 1/3 of the book is pretty rough, but it quickly moves past the familiar story of a new recruit going off to war and into something much more interesting: what do you do with human weapons of war when you’re done with your war? I went in blind, so wasn’t expecting the second half of the book to take place where it did, but considering the books age (first published in 1985) it’s seems relatively topical and doesn’t have much of the out of the loop science fiction that was being released around that time.

I am both happy and sad to see that Timothy Zahn (one of THE best Star Wars authors) went on to write another eight books in this series. Happy, because it means I get to read another 8 books from a great authors, but sad because it’s 8 more books to read, lol.

I’m going to table the series for now though and move on to a Star Trek book that I got for a buck in a recent sale on Amazon.

Aliens Fireteam Elite

Aliens: Fireteam is a new three-player co-op PvE shooter set in Ridley Scott’s Aliens universe. It’s due out in Summer 2021 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, and Xbox One.

Better than what I hear the Colonial Marines game was (I own that one, but still haven’t had the motivation to play it), but it’s still pretty rough around the edges and you can see the limits of their budget every time you go ‘talk’ to one of the in-game NPCs, as the devs opted to not include mouth movements, just a character standing there while the voice overs happen. Luckily it appears that all the cuts to the game were cosmetic and the actual gameplay is solid and the story is an interesting sort of sequel to the Prometheus movies, with tons of information on the universe at the first and second Alien films were in.

I’d wait till it’s around the $20 mark, I paid the full $40 for it and feel like I got a little less than what I had hoped for. It’s playable by yourself, but you’ll have a much better time playing it with two other friends. I have a fair bit of gameplay up on twitch if you want to hear me complain about having to get off my couch about 50 times because of reasons.
