The thrilling follow-up to Salvation, featuring alien first contact, threats to humanity, a future war and amazing technological advances – the page-turning adv

Worlds better than the first book in the trilogy, there’s only two time periods in the story instead of 6, though the cast of characters in the book is still huge, around 30 names to keep track of. I’m firmly looking forward to the third book in the series, the way these have been going, it’s should be just a single time period with about half the people.

    Speed 2 Cruise Control

Directed by Jan de Bont. With Sandra Bullock, Jason Patric, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison. A computer hacker breaks into the computer system of the Seabourn Legend cruise liner and sets it speeding on a collision course into a gigantic oil tanker.

This is a curious movie and has the feeling of a script that was named something like “panic in the ocean” but was shoe horned into the “Speed” universe when the first movie did well enough to warrant a sequel. Sadly there’s no Keanu, but Jason Patric does a fine enough job as the new romantic partner of Sandra Bullock. Interesting enough, the guy that payed Boba Fett and all the clone troopers in the Star Wars films is here, arguably getting more screen time than anyone else.

This came out just a few months before Titanic, a fact that I had to look up because there are so many scenes that reminded me of that film, guess the lifeboats and deck drama were just obvious parts of a boat-at-sea actiondramedy.

There’s a lot of mock in the film, from the forced actions scenes (underwater line feeding was just goofy) to William Dafoe’s absolutely manic portrayal of a hacker that’s somehow flooding the insides of a boat by flooding the ballast tanks, but I appreciate what they were going for and can see this as the big dumb action film that it is, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than that.

City Slickers II The Legend of Curly’s Gold

Directed by Paul Weiland. With Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniel Stern, Jon Lovitz. One year after their first adventure, Mitch Robbins and his friends discover a treasure map that belonged to their late trail guide Curly and they set out to discover its secrets.

A fine sequel to the original movie, though this follow up is slightly more depressing than the first one.

Last Night on Millionass we had sex with a millionaire

    Love Death & Robots

Created by Tim Miller. With Scott Whyte, Nolan North, Steven Pacey, Emily O’Brien. A collection of animated short stories that span various genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy.

At eight episodes, season two is much shorter than season one’s 18 episodes, and none of them really reach the quality of the first season. The effects are all top notch and the animation teams deserve your attentions, but nearly all of the stories were either too close to other familiar stories (tall grass) or hit way too close to uncomfortable subjects (shooting babies in their faces because who knows why, just keep shooting babies and showing dead children?). I’m particularly confused about the last story which was a whimsical stroll through the results of a Lilliputian’s discovery of a dead Guiliver on a beach.

Since it’s so short though, I still suggest checking it out because maybe you’ll find something that I didn’t appreciate.

    Those Who Wish Me Dead

Directed by Taylor Sheridan. With Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Finn Little, Jon Bernthal. A teenage murder witness finds himself pursued by twin assassins in the Montana wilderness with a survival expert tasked with protecting him — and a forest fire threatening to consume them all.

Angelina Jolie is pretty good and having seen only one trailer, I missed who the other stars were going to be, so I was pleasantly surprised to see several familiar faces pop up. The movie reminds me, in a good way, of my time playing Firewatch, a 2016 game about loneliness vs being alone, though this movie is much more of a action hero drama than that game was.
