Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood: Directed by Quentin Tarantino. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Emile Hirsch. A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.

It’s Quentin Tarantino, but not like I’ve seen in a while, there’s no great war, great injustice, or even a great cause to be celebrated, just the ins and outs of the lives of people working in Hollywood. There’s a brief scene with Sydney Sweeney, who seems to be everywhere now days, which isn’t so much of a complaint, I do like her for many reasons (some larger than others), but it was near after her scene that the movie went off the rails for me. As soon as the revisionist history began, I felt a familiar sour taste forming in my opinion of the film. It’s the same type of thing Tarantino did with Inglorious Basterds, only much less effective, and much more noticeable a cry for manufactured justice. There’s a line between vengeance movies that like to say “what if” but I think this is far beyond the point where I think it’s just a whimsical fantasy of revenge and goes into the territory of “all you need is one good man with a gun” territory. In this universe, one guy and his dog was all that was needed to completely change history, which of course is total bs.
