    Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity: Directed by Oren Peli. With Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong. After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.

My wife was like “oh hey, let’s watch a scary movie for Halloween” and I was like “oh, like ‘Scary Movie’ or something like that?” and she’s like, no. Paranormal Activity. She didn’t know it, but this movie freaked me out back when I originally watched it, all because of that flour on the ground scene. It did real psychological harm to me and ever since, I’ve had to sleep with the door shut and locked, not that either of those things would keep a demon out of my bedroom if it wanted to get in there.

It’s spooky and I still don’t leave my door open.

    Nekromantik

Nekromantik: Directed by Jörg Buttgereit. With Bernd Daktari Lorenz, Beatrice Manowski, Harald Lundt, Collosseo. A street sweeper who cleans up after grisly accidents brings home a full corpse for him and his wife to enjoy sexually, but is dismayed to see that his wife prefers the corpse over him.

Near the top of movies that “could never be made today”, this is a 1987 movie about a guy that loses his girlfriend to a corpse, then kills himself while masturbating with his own blood. It’s about as fucked up as you could imagine, but I could firmly see it being remade with modern sensibilities without much editing, especially if it’s redone by anyone not in Hollywood. The 1987 version of the film is an amaturish, low budget exploitation film that’s there to shock you more than terrify you, with copous amounts of blood and gristle, with jars of human body parts in a closet and the butchering of a live rabbit. The rabbit scene actually looks like it’s from a documentary about life on a far, so while it’s shocking to see an animal bled out and skinned, the actual visuals are more clinical than horrifying.

It’s only moderately horror, mostly just goopy gross shock, not worth your time at all.

    Army of Thieves

Army of Thieves: Directed by Matthias Schweighöfer. With Matthias Schweighöfer, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin. A prequel, set before the events of Army of the Dead, which focuses on German safecracker Ludwig Dieter leading a group of aspiring thieves on a top secret heist during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse.

It was marketed as a prequel to Army of the Dead, but there’s nothing about either of the movies that are necessary to enjoy the other one, and to be honest, this is the better of the two films. The story is a classic: bring together a group of people with special skills to rob some important people of expensive things. In the far far background of the story is a zombie infection in Las Vegas, seen only on the televisions that are on in the background, or in the nightmares of the cast. I had thought that it was directed by Zack Snyder, but looks like he was ‘just’ the writer of the story and directing was done by Matthias Schweighöfer, who also plays the main character.

    Cruella

Cruella: Directed by Craig Gillespie. With Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser. A live-action prequel feature film following a young Cruella de Vil.

Did this really need to be made? nah. It’s a fun movie that would have been more fun if it wasn’t tied into the murderous and problematic 101 Dalmatians movie, but alas, the moving going public is much more comfortable with familiar stories than they are with original IP, so here we are with a perfectly fine movie about a woman extracting vengeance from an over the top evil baroness with over the top straight up evil and terrifying dogs.

The best part of the film was Emma Stone. The worst part was Emma Stone’s accent.
