A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010
Tags:A Nightmare on Elm Street, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
A few big name actresses here, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, and Connie Britton, all of whom are big enough stars that I expected they would survive the movie, but I guess I should have known better, normally the survival rates for a Nightmare flick is 1 or 2, maybe 4 if you’re dream warriors. I’m a big fan of what Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Human Target) did with the Freddy role, which is comparable to Robert Englund’s first outing. The special effects on his face were downright creepy, unlike the previous film where it was a rubber mask with no gore or horror to it at all.
This was a good Nightmare film, but I’m happy the franchise is inactive, it’s a difficult well to go back to again and again.

What’s up with Jack Black and all these kid friendly films lately? (checking google) Oh, his kids are 10 and 12, so now he’s doing stuff that’s going to appeal to them too. That’s a thing I guess, it’s not like all his previous work was so raunchy that kids could never watch it. On to the film though:
It was fun. No one’s going to write a thousand word essay on how great it was, but it was a fun movie to watch, Jack Black was charming as always and Cate Blanchett was distressingly pretty and stole nearly every scene she was in. I see why she was chosen for the role, but it really felt like she was slumming it here.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 The Dream Child
Tags:A Nightmare on Elm Street, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
The movie opens with an infamous Rape Room that birthed Freddy; an origin that took 5 movies to get to and is completely fucked up in any way that I think about it. This scene is followed up by a graduation scene that goes on way too long and doesn’t really have the same feel as the rest of the movie. Turns out that Freddy was a demon baby from birth! born from a nun that was nearly raped to death by crazy people, but this isn’t just a flashback though, this is the actual rebirth of freddy, and freddy can getcha while you’re awake now! but why!?
Maybe because the main girl is “just a little pregnant”?
There was another rap song during the credits, I don’t think freddy was rapping this time though, for better or worse.

Fantastically better than I was expecting, the acting was fantastic, the story was believable, and the special effect were on point and completely believable. I went in thinking this was going to be yet another WW2 zombie story, but it isn’t. I mean, it sorta is, but not in the way those trailers would make you think.
I suggest you check it out if you liked Inglorious Basterds, it had the same attention to detail and the same kind of brutality.
Wakefield
Tags:Bryan Cranston, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
This is a one man show for Bryan Cranston, starring Jennifer Gardner’s sideboob. Much like other movies that are primarily one person (Buried is the first to come to mind), the entire movie hinges on the abilities of the primary star, which in this case are fantastically and readily apparent. The entire concept is one that most people are familiar with and have likely played around with in their heads: What if we just gave up on our lives and went somewhere else? Only in this case, he didn’t go anywhere, he just lived in the detached garage watching his family move on.
The ultimate resolution left me feeling weird, but honestly I feel like what would happen in the 30 seconds after the final scene would be perfect content for another full movie and I’m happy to leave it where they left it.
It’s great fodder for discussion at least, so if you’ve seen Wakefield, how do you feel about his decision to detach, and how do you feel about that final scene?
Titans
Tags:Comic Books, Television, Television Reviews
This is the best I’ve ever seen for live action Titans. The series thus far has been ok to great, with some weird pacing issues that happen from time to time. There was a curious pocket pilot episode for another entirely different show, and while yes it got us Beast Boy, it still felt out of place.
The CW is still killing it with their shows, but Titans is a bit better than anything they’ve offered so far, but only just.
Star Trek Fleet Command

A mobile game that uses the way overused “timers” method of gaming, in which the players have multiple countdown timers that they manage and get time reduction tokens by completing mundane tasks. As you might imagine, you can purchase an in game currency to in turn purchase those same reduction tokens. It’s all very boring, very repetitive and a complete waste of time. Here’s an ingame screenshot, in it there’s a “winner” countdown with 4 counters inside, a lootbox count down with 3 counters inside, then on the left is a wrench that has the two upgrade countdowns.
Here’s the trailer that sold me on trying the game out.
The trailer is a complete lie, at no point is there FPS space combat, it’s all automated and pretty damn boring.
It’s a great trailer though, mad props to studio that made it.
The Incredible Hulk 4k
Tags:Comic Books, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, The Incredible Hulk
A perfect example of a terrible, horrible, no good, lack luster, incompetently and badly done 4k transfer. All the colors are muted, all the dark parts of the movie are inexplicably darker and more difficult to see, and I get the sense that there is no HDR on this disk. The audio track is still great, the surround sound features during the soda bottling fight are awesome, but all those great audio effects are for nothing if you can’t see anything at all on the screen.
Skip this 4k version, I’m sure they’re going to go back to this well again to make better choices.
Pacific Rim 4k

I’ve heard that this movie is pretty great in 4k and I found it for $9 at Target, so I jumped on it as quickly as possible, which it turns out was not as easy as I had assumed. We have several Targets here in town, and while the Target.com website suggested that the closest store had a couple copies, they did not, in fact, have any. They checked their internal inventory system and saw that there were two copies on the far far side of town, so I called that store and asked them to pull one for me, which they had no problem doing.
When I got down there though, I found they had pulled me the HD version and not the UHD version, so the guy had to go hunting for it, luckily finding it without much fuss.
I’m here to tell you, this is by far the definitive version of the film, and if you really want to put your new 4k tv through it’s paces, this is the movie to do it with. That scene with the plasma sword while in orbit? Absolutely breathtaking. That scene where they punch the other thing? Absolutely breathtaking. It’s a great film to begin with, but the 4k transfer is nearly flawless as far as I’m concerned and highly suggest seeing it in that format.
Freddys Dead The Final Nightmare
Tags:A Nightmare on Elm Street, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies
That’s the official amazon description, which spoils the only “fun” part of the movie: Freddy had a kid! And he had a wife! This was the first Freddy movie that I noticed is filed under “comedy horror” according to wikipedia, and after watching all these, yeah that’s about right. From a map that says “we’re fucked” to Freddy actively using a NES slogan “now I’m playing with power”, all wrapped up with the idea that this all wasn’t really Freddy’s fault, it was the three creatures that looked like the fish from a monty python movie:
No rapping over the end of this one, just a jazzy orchestral number.
Is that disappointment that I feel over this? Maybe. The rapping was just campy enough that it worked for me.

I’ve seen John Wick about a dozen times at this point, but never in 4k!
It’s still a good movie, even in 4k, though this first one didn’t really have much in it to highlight the 4k-ness of it’s true nature.

A fun game with some pretty simple mechanics, there were about 40 different campaign levels and I feel like it could have been tightened up to about 30 levels.
Worth what I paid for it though, it was entertaining for a few weeks of gameplay.

Nearly every chinese actors you’ve ever seen in American films are represented here, and yet in some way this does not feel forced, unlike movies like the Meg where everything about the move just screams that it was made just to be sold to asians. It’s a fantastic movie with some really fantastic scenes both visually and plotwise. There’s a couple different plotlines going on, both of which are resolved satisfactorily.

I love this movie, it was great when I watched it originally, I liked the alien design and soundtrack, but it turns out that a couple of the cast went on to do bigger and better things, namely John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker.

Level 101 Tim Larkin Artifact
Tags:Gaming, Level With Emily Reese, Music
This episode was great fun. Composer Tim Larkin invited us to Salt Lake City to hang out during the recording sessions for the new game, Artifact. We didn’t GO go, but we did interview him after each session, and once more right before the release of the game (which was Nov. 28, 2018). This episode combines all three interviews.
Even cooler, Tim shared “stems” from one of the tracks with us. For instance, Tim recorded groups of instruments separately, but when you stack them all together, you get the full track. We got those sections from a track called “Aghanim’s Obsession.” You’ll get to hear some of those stems, and it’s so very cool.
Tim also shared photos of the recording sessions in Salt Lake, and we’ll make those available to patrons in a separate post.
Artifact, by the way, is a new card game based on the lore of Dota. Dota is a MOBA from Valve Corp., where Tim works. And Tim’s done the music for Dota for nearly 10 years.
P.S. I *love* the music for this game.
