I’ve struggled through yet another viewing of the entire series, this time staying 100% awake for 100% of the episodes, mostly because we were watching one or two episodes a night with dinner. It’s a shame the series never really got the resolution that I rightly deserved, as that fourth season was showing some real promise, but it had it’s knees blown out by the powers behind the wheel with a final episode that really took the wind out of the sails for fans of ENT.
The story continued on in the books I’m happy to say, but it’s a shame you have to shift media formats to get more of a good thing.

Starts off slow and in a manner that’s exceptionally similar to something that actually happened on the TV show, I think I need to rewatch season 4 in order to properly contextualize the meetings that Burnham has. I say it starts slow, but it definitely doesn’t stay that way, as this is more like a series of connected short stories about Burnham’s adventures in the far, far future, the depths of despair she fell to, and the struggles she faced without any of the mainstays of her previous life as a Commander in Starfleet. The final confrontation is telegraphed well enough that I wasn’t shocked when it happened, but it wasn’t so far out that I became impatient waiting for it to happen. If you’re a Disco fan, this is a great ‘fill in the blanks’ story written by one of the better Trek authors.

Not sure why I felt like I needed to reach this again, other than it popped up to the top of my Kindle list for some reason. It’s still one of the best military science fiction stories with nearly a third of the book taking place in boot camp and really only having a single real combat story element, but it’s tightly written and the world is so well made that I didn’t even notice that last part until it was all over. There’s some real unfortunate stuff in the book though, I’ve not done a lot of research on if these were Heinlein’s actual thoughts on politics, but the book is solidly in the facist camp, with a firm opinion that it’s the loss of corporal punishment on both a parental and societal level that’s caused all the modern issues of crime and social decay. With hindsight we can see that when this book was written in 1959 that crime was really just getting started, so I wonder how he would feel knowing the huge spike would be happening in just 20 or 30 years later, then having a massive drop to way below the 50’s levels, all because we opened abortion access and stopped mainlining leaded gasoline?
After reading this, I can see how John Scalzi’s “Old Man’s War” did so well with all those elements removed and a more modern humanity depicted. In fact, I actually recommend OMW over Starship Troopers these days, if only because Scalzi’s version has actual green little men in it.

A well written novel with all sorts of fun adventures for a very small subset of the crew, who are trying to find a missing scientist, only to find a god like creature has enslaved a planet’s worth of natives and is going crazy. I’m not too happy with some of the main thrusts of the book, primarily how many people the away team ends up killing (hundreds at least), nor was I particularly happy to be back in the midst of the Vanguard story. I think it’s time to put those god creatures to bed and move along, maybe with more Seekers style adventures?
