    DMZ

DMZ: With Rosario Dawson, Hoon Lee, Freddy Miyares, Jordan Preston Carter. In a near-future civil-war-torn America, fearless medic Alma sets out on a harrowing quest to find her missing son – crossing into the demilitarized zone of Manhattan, where a ruthless battle for control rages between rival gang leaders.

Rosario Dawson seems to be in Hollywood’s spotlight these last couple years, from playing a fan favorite in the Netflix Marvel television series, to playing a fan favorite in Disney’s The Mandalorian, to doing a long list of voice over work, she seems to be everywhere I look. For good reason too, every role I’ve ever seen her in, she’s giving her best and absolutely kills every role that she’s in, and DMZ is no different. The show is loosely based on a comic book series of the same name, one that I remember reading a few issues of many years ago and thinking “huh, this is interesting but not for me” and the television show is only slightly more interesting to me, but luckily with Dawson’s inclusion, it was worth my time. I’m actually much more interested in the universe that the story takes place in, but other than “the US has a civil war and the DMZ between the two factions is in NYC” they don’t go into any details at all about anything of interest. This is much more of a character piece than a world building film, but it’s definitely worth your time.

    Transformers: The Last Knight

Transformers: The Last Knight: Directed by Michael Bay. With Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Laura Haddock. A deadly threat from Earth’s history reappears and a hunt for a lost artifact takes place between Autobots and Decepticons, while Optimus Prime encounters his creator in space.

Arguably the most stupid episode of the franchise, but also arguably the strongest on plot, animation, and drama. Not acting though, oof. It was released back in 2017 and I don’t have the emotional investment to see when/if a sequel is happening, maybe the story elements they were setting up here were forgone for the Prequel/reboot of “Bumblebee” that came out a year later? Who know!

Also: Who cares! This is a franchise that was built on a shared universe across dozens of animated series, each one picking and choosing which parts of the lore make sense and which they’re going to just ignore. Now that these live action films are making a billion plus per film, we’re never going to see the end of them.

Maybe one day we’ll get our GI Joe / Transformers live action cross over movie, and it’ll be awesome.
