Wonder Woman

 Wonder Woman

Directed by Patty Jenkins. With Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Had a discussion about what Wonder Woman did right that Captain Marvel did not and vice versa. In a stunning coincidence, Microsoft had the UHD version on sale for $9 and I had a $10 credit, so it worked out well!

  • The Death of Superman Lives What Happened

The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?

Directed by Jon Schnepp. With Nicolas Cage, Kevin Smith, Tim Burton, Dan Gilroy. A documentary about the proposed 1998 Superman Lives feature film that would have starred Nicolas Cage.

This was absolutely fantastic, and much higher quality than I expected going on. They were able to get pretty much everyone involved in the business making of the film to do interviews. This film also changed my opinion on that infamous Supersuit, I had only seen the one snap of it, and seeing it in motion and powered up really shows how amazing it would have been to see on screen. Maybe it wouldn’t have been a perfect film, but it would have been something different.

    Alien Isolation TV Mini-Series 2019 – IMDb

Alien: Isolation (TV Mini Series 2019) IMDb

Fifteen years after her mother disappeared on the deep space towing ship Nostromo, Amanda Ripley travels to a remote space station that may hold clues to her mother’s fate. But disaster strikes as she arrives at her destination.

Adapted from cut scenes of the video game by the same name. There’s some pretty big holes in the plot that were apparently part of the player portions and not part of the cut scenes, but this was pretty interesting to watch.

    Parallels

     Parallels

Directed by Christopher Leone. With Mark Hapka, Jessica Rothe, Eric Jungmann, Constance Wu. A mysterious building is the gateway to infinite parallel Earths.

Bonkers story that seems familiar and doesn’t do anything new with the formula. If you’ve watched an episode or two of Sliders, that’s what this is, just with a whole lot less mobility. I’d like to see a series with the premises that they set up in the movie but never follow through with!

Ilhan Omar is facing censure, even as prominent Republicans are tweeting out anti-Semitic messaging.

I’m routinely finding new depths that the Republicans can go to and still shock me. What’s most alarming about this specific situation is how incompetently the Democrats are handling it.

A disclosure about a troubled surveillance program could upend a pending battle in Congress over security and privacy.

A huge win for democracy and privacy, but it really shows how utterly incompetent the Trump Administration has been with National Security.

A ship carrying settlers to Mars is knocked off course, causing the consumption-obsessed passengers to consider their place in the universe, in Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja’s eerie and caustic sci-fi adaptation of a work by Swedish Nobel Prize–winning writer Harry Martinson.

    Bohemian Rhapsody

     Bohemian Rhapsody

Directed by Bryan Singer. With Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy. The story of the legendary rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).

A fun movie that had an uneven pacing and tragically omits most of the band’s early history. That’s expected for a movie that’s just about Freddy, but it’s a missed opportunity for a movie named after a band’s famous song.

    Gods of Egypt

     Gods of Egypt

Directed by Alex Proyas. With Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Chadwick Boseman. Mortal hero Bek teams with the god Horus in an alliance against Set, the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.

Much maligned for it’s casting decisions, this turned out to be a much deeper movie than I was expecting. Sure, all the Egyptian gods were played by mostly white folks (Black Panther aside), but this is a solid science fiction film with supernatural elements. It’s free on TUBI right now if you can stomach the 20+ commercials that play during a two hour movie.

With Natalia Tena, Tom Felton, Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder. A group of strangers struggle for survival aboard a spaceship heading to a distant planet.

It’s Pandorum, but I think they’re actually in space? There’a mini Harry Potter reunion going on with Natalia Tena (tonks) and Tom Felton (Malfoy) taking lead roles. I should mention, I thought the premise and execution of Pandorum was fantastic, so I really enjoyed the first (free!) episode. Check it out here:

    The Domestics

     The Domestics

Directed by Mike P. Nelson. With Kate Bosworth, Tyler Hoechlin, Sonoya Mizuno, Lance Reddick. In the weeks following an apocalyptic event, a husband and wife venture across the countryside inhabited by deadly factions in search of safety, and must work together as they are pushed to the breaking point in order to survive.

Tyler Hoechlin is the new superman in the Supergirl TV series. He’s pretty cool in that show. And that’s Kate Bosworth, who only looks kinda familiar in the movie, and played Lois Lane in the much maligned Superman Returns, which remains my favorite Superman flick to this day. Even though both of these actors are amazing, there’s nothing Super about this film, it has a familiar story with a post apocalyptic setting, but doesn’t have the scope or editing to make it feel real.

Time Travel and a precocious kid. Sprinkle in some hyper violence and superpowers that are vague, yet powerful and you have the umbrella academy! It’s not a great show, but it’s watchable.

Great game for the time period it was published in, but I don’t have personal nostalgia for the game, so the bad camera and wonky audio turned me off enough to just turn the game off about half way through.

    Capsule

After years of flying fighter planes and 5 years as test pilot, Guy is now, Dec. 4, 1959, on a secret British space capsule orbiting Earth trying to reenter but things start going wrong. Can he, despite cold war, get back to Earth safely?

As far I can tell, this is purely fictional. It’s a one man show (until it suddenly very much isn’t) and it has some problems with pacing and there was a point with some of the people he was talking to over the radio that I just gave up on my suspension of disbelief.
