Level Bit 01: Woody Jackson "Revisiting Downes Ranch"

This is the first installment of our “Level Bits” where I talk over a track I like from a game. These bits are rough and ready, done in one or two takes, so nothing fancy! And I pop my P’s a lot in this one, which is annoying, and I apologize.

Level Bit 01 deals with music you hear as you’re finishing a mission called “Sodom Back to Gomorrah”, and it is specifically the music you hear as you’re leaving a place called Downes Ranch.

It’s lovely music, sad, innocent, simple, amateurish (I’ll explain that, don’t take it wrong!). Upon listening back, I’m fairly certain the lowest string is a double bass, not a cello, so forgive me for that mistake. I believe I refer to that part as the “low stringed instrument” mostly. And it totally could be a cello. Someone will know!

Back with a full episode next week, hope you enjoy this Bit!

    Green Book

     Green Book

Directed by Peter Farrelly. With Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, Sebastian Maniscalco. A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.

Best movie of 2018, at least according to the Academy. It was an interesting movie using some sad tropes that I wish we’d just be able to move past, as a Nation, but it seems like we’re never going to be able to get over them completely.

  • Paths of Glory

     Paths of Glory

Directed by Stanley Kubrick. With Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou, George Macready. After refusing to attack an enemy position, a general accuses the soldiers of cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them.

Another Hollywood glorification of honor and courage, as well as a minor spitting in the eye of a 1% upper crust aristocratic general. Kirk Douglas is great, but this is less than I was expecting.

    The Miseducation of Cameron Post

     The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Directed by Desiree Akhavan. With Chloë Grace Moretz, Steven Hauck, Quinn Shephard, Kerry Butler. In 1993, a teenage girl is forced into a gay conversion therapy center by her conservative guardians.

Another movie based on a book, this time the subject matter is the horrific practice of conversion therapy, in which people with “sins” are taught to hate the sins at all cost. It’s a great movie but a sad subject matter.

Level 102 Nicolas Diteriks They Are Billions

Level 102: Nicolas Diteriks, They Are Billions

Nicolas Diteriks composed music for the real-time-strategy zombie survival game called They Are Billions. I was really taken with the art and design for this game – it’s steampunk, the colors are great, and it’s fun to look at. Nicolas used a full orchestra, recorded in eastern Europe, and used a lot of metallic sounds too to reflect that steampunk aspect of it.

Nicolas has worked with a composer we’ve had on Level a few times before, and will again soon: Olivier Deriviere.

Also in this conversation, Nicolas and I talk about a couple of great jazz pianists. We mention Shai Maestro and Esbjörn Svensson.

    Captive State

     Captive State

Directed by Rupert Wyatt. With John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors, Vera Farmiga. Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, Captive State explores the lives on both sides of the conflict – the collaborators and dissidents.

This is a great film, but I see why it’s getting mixed reviews, not everyone can sit through the suspense or be ok with how the movie ended. The crowd I watched this with seemed confused by the ending or some of the major plot points, I over heard a few people saying they’d just have to ask a friend what it all meant. I was thinking it was a little too on the nose or heavy handed with it’s foreshadowing, but apparently you really do have to hit people over their heads to get them to understand what’s going on.

    Love Death & Robots

     Love, Death & Robots

Created by Tim Miller. With Scott Whyte, Nolan North, Matthew Yang King, Michael Benyaer. A collection of animated short stories that span various genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy.

Fantastic stories from some fantastic authors. I knew about Marko Kloos and John Scalzi’s work in the series, but was surprised when I recognized Alastair Reynolds’ work before his name even popped up in the credits. It’s incredibly NSFW, but a fantastic anthology none the less.

    Gods of Egypt

     Gods of Egypt

Directed by Alex Proyas. With Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Chadwick Boseman. Mortal hero Bek teams with the god Horus in an alliance against Set, the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.

Much maligned for it’s casting decisions, this turned out to be a much deeper movie than I was expecting. Sure, all the Egyptian gods were played by mostly white folks (Black Panther aside), but this is a solid science fiction film with supernatural elements. It’s free on TUBI right now if you can stomach the 20+ commercials that play during a two hour movie.

Directed by Patty Jenkins. With Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Had a discussion about what Wonder Woman did right that Captain Marvel did not and vice versa. In a stunning coincidence, Microsoft had the UHD version on sale for $9 and I had a $10 credit, so it worked out well!
