This feels like a tv movie, both in visual framing and soundtrack, and honestly it’s not really all that good of a movie. There’s some pretty fucked up stuff that happens, especially if you know how Robin’s life ended outside of the movies.
Skip this unless you’re doing a watch of every film Robin Williams has done, and even then, only watch it once.

Look, I know that not many people enjoyed this film, but it has everything that I could ask for in a military science fiction film: a kickin story, an awesome soundtrack, and giant fucking cats in space marine armor. I still haven’t played the games the movie is based on, though I do own them. Maybe they’ll get played in my “Monday backlog” twitch streams, maybe not, who knows.

I’m sure no one was shocked that a decision was made to make yet another Jurassic Park / World movie, and I’m sure no one is shocked at all that it’s an entertaining film with some pretty weird narrative choices and dumb plot points that make little to no sense, and that nearly the entire thing is just as contrived as possible. I did enjoy myself, yes, but you really have to turn off your brain and enthusiastically accept that the dumbest / corniest thing that you think will happen is going to actually happen.
I will say that there was one scene that I thoroughly enjoyed, which is when our heroes are getting onto an airplane in a fun and interesting way, there’s a visual reference to the Millennium Falcon, which felt appropriate considering that Bryce Dallas Howard was also in the same scene and how influential she’s been in the Star Wars franchise for the last few years. That one shot, coupled with how they dealt with their problems that were following them was exceptionally satisfying. That’s the one scene though that I really thought was great, the rest of the film wasn’t anything that I’d say “golly that was worth the $40 I just spent”, but luckily I have the AMC A-List thing, so my cost was greatly reduced to something like $10 for the film.
$10 would have been just right for this movie. I look forward to the next sequel or trilogy or whatever it is they decide to do next, this movie ended on a positive note, but there’s still clearly huge problems with having dinosaurs just roaming around our world.
Maybe the next one will feature dinosaurs….. in space?

Guess the synopsis of the book tells you how old it is, and I guess what they’re going for, though this is more of a standard Trek adventure than I think they’re setting people up for. I mean, I’m reading it because I’m a Trek fan, not because I’m a Alias fan, right?
Regardless, this is the first book in the Vanguard series, it features it’s own cast and crews of an exceptionally large “Vanguard” class space station that has several permanent resident spaceships, but for this first adventure they include the TOS crew and ship, fresh off one of their first adventures with a relatively green captain Kirk. It’s a quick adventure that flows pretty quickly, but there’s way too many names for my taste. A good number for me is around four to five main characters with maybe half a dozen supporting ones, but I think there’s about 10 main ones here, with about 20 supporting characters, so I had to check notes from time to time to remember who was doing what. Didn’t help me at all that I was reading this before going to sleep, so there were several chapters that I re-read more than was strictly necessary.
It’s a good first step though and I look forward to moving on to the next in the series.
Her tweet makes more sense now.
