“Rogue Elements” Wins A 2022 Scribe Award

John Jackson Miller has announced on his Facebook page that his novel “Star Trek: Picard — Rogue Elements” has won a Scribe Award:

Well, I’m floored. I just heard from fellow nominee (and 2022’s recipient of the Faust Grandmaster Award) David Mack that my STAR TREK: PICARD – ROGUE ELEMENTS received the Scribe Award for Best Tie-In Novel – Speculative from the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers this afternoon at Comic-Con International San Diego. It’s my third in the category following STAR WARS: KENOBI in 2014 and last year’s STAR TREK: DISCOVERY – DIE STANDING.

    Jakob’s Wife

Jakob’s Wife: Directed by Travis Stevens. With Barbara Crampton, Larry Fessenden, Bonnie Aarons, Nyisha Bell. Anne, married to a small-town Minister, feels her life has been shrinking over the past 30 years. Encountering “The Master” brings her a new sense of power and an appetite to live bolder. However, the change comes with a heavy body count.

A fun and campy horror film with a somewhat unique twist of also being a relationship drama. It’s a medium level budget film with medium level special effects and acting, but there’s some real heart in the film that any fan of the genre will appreciate.

  • Senior Year

Senior Year: Directed by Alex Hardcastle. With Rebel Wilson, Angourie Rice, Mary Holland, Molly Brown. A cheerleading stunt gone wrong landed her in a 20-year coma. Now she’s 37, newly awake and ready to live out her high school dream: becoming prom queen.

This is the first role that I’ve seen Rebel Wilson in since she lost all that weight (80 pounds!) and you’ll be happy to know that her brand of humor still hits exactly the way it did before, so if you liked her before, you’ll still like her. It’s just a bit weird that now she’s playing “hot girl” roles, of which is is a novel way of getting her to play the “hot high school cheerleader” role while being over 40 years old.  There’s a few that come to mind like “Jack“, “Billy Madison“, or “Never Been Kissed“, but this is the first to my knowledge with the conceit of having the character in a coma for 20 years, then have her pop right back into life like nothing had happened, which to be honest feels like a role hand made for Rebel Wilson.

It’s a fun movie that never takes itself too seriously.  I’ve never been a huge fan of Rebel’s style of humor, but she does a great job at trying to convince me to keep giving her chances.

    Thir13en Ghosts

Thir13en Ghosts: Directed by Steve Beck. With Tony Shalhoub, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth. When Cyrus Kriticos, a very rich collector of unique things, dies, he leaves his house, fortune, and his prized collection of ghosts.

    There’s 12 ghosts! No wait, 13! What a twist!

This is an overly campy horror film from 2001 that I missed the first time around, but my wife sure didn’t, it was on her list of spooky films to watch, and to be honest it was a fun film that had some pretty neat ideas about how the afterlife works and some pretty imaginative architectural concepts as well. Casting Tony Shalhoub was a weird choice, as he’s not someone that comes to mind when i think “spooky horror film”, but he did his job well enough. Matthew Lillard was the best he’s ever looked in the first portion of the film, something about those frames on him in a junk yard at night really got my motor running! The same can’t be said for either Shannon Elizabeth or Rah Digga, both of whom were playing roles that seemed to be either miscast or misdirected.
