    Wont You Be My Neighbor

     Wont You Be My Neighbor?

Directed by Morgan Neville. With Fred Rogers, Joanne Rogers, John Rogers, Jim Rogers. An exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children’s television host, Fred Rogers.

One of the best people that have ever lives and someone that’s done more for our country than any one else. Also, proof that there is no loving, caring god, because if someone like Mr Rogers should be punished with such a painful death, what hope do any of the rest of us have?

    After Life

     After Life

With Ricky Gervais, Tom Basden, Tony Way, Diane Morgan. After Tony’s wife dies unexpectedly, his nice-guy persona is altered into an impulsive, devil-may-care attitude taking his old world by storm.

Anyone that’s ever lost anyone that they’ve cared for will understand what happens in this show. No idea if there’s going to be a second season, in somewhat I hope there isn’t because season one had the perfect ending for me.

    The Light Brigade

     The Light Brigade

From the Hugo Award–winning author of The Stars Are Legion comes a brand-new science fiction thriller about a futuristic war during which soldiers are broken down into light in order to get them to the front lines on Mars.

I thought it was going to be a space opera, or at least a military science fiction novel, but it ended up being more of a silly and contrived story that didn’t hold my interest. I don’t really want to speak to the main thing that’s grinding my gears as it’s the main twist of the story, but I like this type of story even less in a book than I do on tv.

    Mary Poppins

     Mary Poppins

Directed by Robert Stevenson. With Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns. In turn of the century London, a magical nanny employs music and adventure to help two neglected children become closer to their father.

Set in 1910 when men were men, women did not have the vote, but who needs the vote when you have a witch like Mary Poppins to set everything right? There’s some good music, excellent story beats, and some truly exciting idea here, but the only reason I went back to watch it is so I have a fresh memory when i watch the Return.

James Madison High School in Houston has implemented a dress code targeted toward parents that has riled some people up.

  • Avengers Age of Ultron

     Avengers: Age of Ultron

Directed by Joss Whedon. With Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth. When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it’s up to Earth’s mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.

Every time I think back to this movie, I have negative memories of it, but then every time I go back to watch it again, I discover that I really do enjoy nearly every aspect of it. I skipped Captain America: Winter Soldier, so I forgot that SHIELD was not a thing by the time AoU came around, but honestly, what good were they anyways.

Level 104 Olivier Deriviere 11-11 Memories Retold

Level 104: Olivier Deriviere 11 11 Memories Retold

Presenting another amazing score by French composer Olivier Deriviere in this episode. For 11-11: Memories Retold, Olivier used the Philharmonia Orchestra. This orchestra is one of a handful of permanent, salaried orchestras in London, which means it’s a big deal. They’re primarily a performance ensemble, and while they’ve recorded soundtracks/scores in the past, it’s not their main gig.

The Pinewood Singers are featured on many tracks as well.

This is a gorgeous score, recorded in a unique way (for a game!) and executed brilliantly by the musicians. Lots of love for this one.

    Infinity Born

     Infinity Born

A breathtaking near-future thriller. The new novel by the NY Times bestselling author whose books have been downloaded over a million times. When DARPA’s billion-dollar program to create Artificial Superintelligence is sabotaged, US operative Cameron Carr is tasked with finding the culprit….

I really wanted to like this book, the story has many elements that I find particularly enjoyable, but they never really seemed to come together very well. There’s a point where the smarted man in the world is bamboozled by a mysterious Russian spy that I found to be unbelievable, which I guess is especially of note when the crux of the novel is something that’s not very likely at all, which is the run away Singularity that I do love to read so much about.

Adventure Time Pirates Of The Enchiridion

Adventure Time: Pirates Of The Enchiridion

The Land of Ooo is underwater, and it’s up to Finn and Jake to find out why.

A pleasurable RPG-lite game with minimal story and some pretty bad optimization for the X-box. It was a fun quick play that overstayed it’s welcome by about an hour, and sometimes characters would freeze completely when loading areas, and at one point I lost the entire center channel of sound. Despite it’s rough edges though I enjoyed my time with the game.

Directed by Chris Peckover. With Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic. On a quiet suburban street, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from intruders, only to discover it’s far from a normal home invasion.

There’s a wonderful point in this film where absolutely everything falls apart and how that scene is handled is glorious. Highly suggest checking this one out if you’re a fan of the possibility of Home Alone / Saw crossover.

I’ll never forgive them for giving it a colon and not an “and” in the title. I’m forever correcting myself when I mention the game title, which is frustrating. The game itself was fun, blissfully short, and reminded me of both “The Cave” and “Unravel”, both ok game, but Max is the better of the three.

     The Highwaymen

Directed by John Lee Hancock. With Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson, Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch. A pair of Texas Rangers come out of retirement to catch the infamous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.

Beautiful looking movie with a soundtrack that pulled me right into it, both Costner and Harrelson are at their prime here, showing why they’re among the best actors out there. It’s ultimately a sad story about a pretty broken period of American history, but the movie is great.

Level 103 Matthew Carl Earl “Legend of Xuan Yuan”

Level 103: Matthew Carl Earl, "Legend of Xuan Yuan"

It’s possible you haven’t heard of Legend of Xuan Yuan, because it’s a mobile game in China.

I don’t make a habit of checking in on the game scene in China, so it was rather random how I discovered this music, and therefore, Matthew Carl Earl.

I was on a big panel for a game audio awards ceremony at the end of 2017 and early 2018 to listen to dozens of scores for games and nominate which I thought were best in certain categories. There were several of games I’d never played and even some I’d never heard of, like Xuan Yuan.

And there’s so much listening involved in that kind of thing, so I’d put on the music from whatever game and continue about my business, taking notes if anything popped out as something I really liked. A couple of scores kept popping out, one of which was Legend of Xuan Yuan, and the other was a game called King of Chaos, also scored by Matthew.

So I reached out to him.

It’s been a long time since we spoke, a year has passed since our chat, but I really enjoyed speaking with him and learning more about him and his musical life.

Level 102: Nicolas Diteriks, They Are Billions

Nicolas Diteriks composed music for the real-time-strategy zombie survival game called They Are Billions. I was really taken with the art and design for this game – it’s steampunk, the colors are great, and it’s fun to look at. Nicolas used a full orchestra, recorded in eastern Europe, and used a lot of metallic sounds too to reflect that steampunk aspect of it.

Nicolas has worked with a composer we’ve had on Level a few times before, and will again soon: Olivier Deriviere.

Also in this conversation, Nicolas and I talk about a couple of great jazz pianists. We mention Shai Maestro and Esbjörn Svensson.
