    Insomnia

Insomnia: Directed by Christopher Nolan. With Al Pacino, Martin Donovan, Oliver ‘Ole’ Zemen, Hilary Swank. Two Los Angeles homicide detectives are dispatched to a northern town where the sun doesn’t set to investigate the methodical murder of a local teen.

Another entry in our Robin Williams rewatch, this one I remember seeing in theaters back in 2002 and not being happy with how serious Robin was in the film. Here we are 20 years later and I’m just fine seeing him expanding from pure humor. This wasn’t his first, nor his last serious role, but I think it’s one of the few that he got absolutely no laughs at all from me during the film, even the movies about suicide or dead children had a couple funny moments.

One thing that I know is that I would not being able to live in Alaska with the “always daylight” or “always night” situation they have going on in parts of the state. I like to have a pitch black room and have the sun wake me up in the morning, and while technology is there for wake up lights, it’s just not the same thing.

    Queen of the Damned

Queen of the Damned: Directed by Michael Rymer. With Stuart Townsend, Marguerite Moreau, Aaliyah, Vincent Perez. In this loose sequel to Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), the vampire Lestat becomes a rock star whose music wakes up the equally beautiful and monstrous queen of all vampires.

This is such a great movie, but I’m really not sure if my opinion of it is because I first saw it in my formative years when I was listening to the type of music featured in “Queen of the Damned”. It’s not only featured in the film, it’s the core component of the entire thing, it’s not just the butter on the bread, it’s the bread itself. I remember having such a crush on Marguerite Moreau, and truth be told, she’s still apparently the bee’s knees. Her career has gone in a direction that doesn’t necessarily interest me, but I’m happy she’s been getting regular work!

Back to the soundtrack, give this a go and tell me it’s not the best thing since bread that’s been buttered:

The story isn’t all that exceptional, with an angry vampire that’s been sleeping for a while, but is woken up by people playing mild rock in his house, which to be clear, he is not in, he’s in his crypt off in the cemetery, but he’s got a psychic connection to the real estate. Turns out that this is the vampire Lestat, the same vampire that was last seen joyriding in a convertible at the end of “Interview with a Vampire”. When they call this a “loose” adaptation, they’re not kidding. Everyone is contrived, over the top, and just extreme for extreme’s sake. Even Aaliyah is playing a vampire that’s too much vampire for modern vampires, so she’s been turned into a statue so she wouldn’t vamp all over the place, and end up just eating every human on the planet. Don’t get me wrong though, Aaliyah is amazing with what she’s given, but she isn’t given much to work with.

I still love the film and suggest it to anyone that likes overwrought vampires hard rock films.

    The Angriest Man in Brooklyn

The Angriest Man in Brooklyn: Directed by Phil Alden Robinson. With Robin Williams, Mila Kunis, Peter Dinklage, Melissa Leo. A perpetually angry man is informed he has 90 minutes to live and promptly sets out to reconcile with his family and friends in the short time he has left.

This feels like a tv movie, both in visual framing and soundtrack, and honestly it’s not really all that good of a movie. There’s some pretty fucked up stuff that happens, especially if you know how Robin’s life ended outside of the movies.

Skip this unless you’re doing a watch of every film Robin Williams has done, and even then, only watch it once.

Look, I know that not many people enjoyed this film, but it has everything that I could ask for in a military science fiction film: a kickin story, an awesome soundtrack, and giant fucking cats in space marine armor. I still haven’t played the games the movie is based on, though I do own them. Maybe they’ll get played in my “Monday backlog” twitch streams, maybe not, who knows.
