The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: Directed by Tom Gormican. With Nicolas Cage, Pedro Pascal, Tiffany Haddish, Sharon Horgan. In this action-packed comedy, Nicolas Cage plays Nick Cage, channeling his iconic characters as he’s caught between a superfan (Pedro Pascal) and a CIA agent (Tiffany Haddish).

Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage is about as meta as you can get without tongue kissing yourself while drinking with yourself at the bar that you brought yourself to. The de-aged scenes in this film just blew my mind, and if you’re as big of a fan as I am, you’ll find certain scenes of the film to be sexually confusing. Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage is reason enough to see the movie, but the support cast is just the absolute perfect icing on the Nicolas Cage cake.

    Firestarter

Firestarter: Directed by Keith Thomas. With Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Michael Greyeyes. A young girl tries to understand how she mysteriously gained the power to set things on fire with her mind.

I’ve still not seen the original film with Drew Barrymore, and I had only just barely been made aware of the basics of the story, so I was somewhat shocked to learn this is straight up a super hero film with pyrokinetics, telepathy, and telekensis. It’s a perfectly watchable film and I had a good time watching it, but there’s something flat about the film that just made the entire thing not work as well as it should have.

Also, they literally burn a cat to death on screen which put me off the entire thing completely.

    Interceptor

Interceptor: Directed by Matthew Reilly. With Elsa Pataky, Luke Bracey, Aaron Glenane, Mayen Mehta. One Army captain must use her years of tactical training and military expertise when a simultaneous coordinated attack threatens the remote missile interceptor station she is in command of.

This feels decidedly like a movie that Jean-Claude Van Damme would have done when he was in his prime and to be frank, Elsa Pataky a great subsitutuion for him in this campy yet scrappy military action film with a solo hero trying to save the world, one kick punch at a time. Sure she’s obviously not American, sure she’s wearing her class A uniform on a trip out to a remote outpost, sure she stabbed a guy through his eye with a gun, but who cares?

If you watch this, you should know that the SBX-1 is a real thing apparently, just not leaded with weapons, at least as far as I can tell from the photos.

    The Survivors

The Survivors: Directed by Michael Ritchie. With Walter Matthau, Robin Williams, Jerry Reed, James Wainwright. Having both lost their jobs, two strangers become unlikely friends after a run in with a would be robber, who is actually a hitman with a grudge against the two.

It’s the “Odd Couple” but with lots and lots of paramilitary action and gun. So many guns. But you have to ask, if you have all those guns, did you bring the right bullets for them?

It’s a relatively funny movie, but not the best work from either Matthau or Robin Williams, but if you want to see how absolutely horrifying NYC was at the height of its decay in the 80s, this is a great take on it.

    Satisfactory on Steam

Satisfactory is a first-person open-world factory building game with a dash of exploration and combat. Play alone or with friends, explore an alien planet, create multi-story factories, and enter conveyor belt heaven!

I’ve played about 15 hours of this world building game and while I’m no where near done with it, I have enough of a feel for the game to give it a strong recommendation with some very slight caveats. I got the game as a part of the Humble Bundle for Ukraine, which was only $40 for a large list of games, including Back4Blood, so the price was right when I got it, normal MSRP for the game is something like $30 right now, which is a bit too rich for me and my admittedly minor interest in builder games.

The game itself is exceptionally strong, with strong motivators to keep you moving towards an actual goal. This is something that I’ve long struggled with other ‘builder’ type of games, where after a certain point I just wonder what the point of all the digital creation is and why I should care at all about it. It runs amazingly smooth at 4k on my gaming laptop, which is notable because of how much movement and action is happening on the screen at all times when you’re in the middle of your massive factory.

The exploration part of the game is fun as well, with the above mentioned caveat that the game itself is still “Early Access” after 5 years of developement, and the exploration portion of the game is the least filled out. There’s a ton of creepy caves to explore, artifacts to find, and local creatures to either gawk at or fight.

I look forward to another 15 or 30 hours in the game!
