    The Fisher King

The Fisher King: Directed by Terry Gilliam. With Jeff Bridges, Adam Bryant, Paul Lombardi, David Hyde Pierce. A former radio DJ, suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake.

If you want to know what 90’s film making was like, this movie is a great look into the transition from the nitty gritty 80’s style to the slightly less gritty but still grungy around the cuffs 90’s films. This is by no means one of Robin’s better films, nor is it Jeff Bridges’. In fact I would suspect that most anyone reading this wouldn’t have known anything about the film. There’s two exceptionally broken men in this story, neither of whom ultimately find their way back to being whole, though one of them decidedly gets the shorter end of the shit stick. The only reason I could suggest this film is if you wanted to see Robin Williams completely nude in a somewhat surprising full fronting moment in the middle of Central Park in the middle of the night. Sure there shadows, but you know exactly what you’re looking at, especially if you rewind a few times and take a good hard look.

The ending is strong,, but man this was a 90’s film dedicated to the highs and lows of NYC. I’m not sure if the city’s all that much better currently, but surely isn’t not worse, is it?

Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee

Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee: Directed by Charlie Russell. With Dean Barrow, Rocco Castoro, Neil Cavuto, Janice Dyson. Life and death of software pioneer John McAfee who developed the software: McAfee Antivirus.

I only tangentially knew about John McAfee and what he was up to in the later parts of his life, but this 1hr 45min movie gave a peak behind the curtain and there’s not much to like about what he was up to, from the supposed ties to governmental hacking and cartels to the over use of drugs that eventually lead to his arrest and dead in a holding cell under what can only be called “suspicious” circumstances. As with most out of their minds rich people, it’s shocking how well documented everything is with him, he really let this film crew follow him around for so long and while under so many medications, you can get a feel for just what kind of a man he was.
