    A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind: Directed by Ron Howard. With Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer. After John Nash, a brilliant but asocial mathematician, accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn for the nightmarish.

I was surprised to recognize Anthony Rapp as one of the college fellows at the beginning of the film. He’s obviously much more known for his time on Star Trek than A Beautiful Mind, but it’s nice to see he’s been around doing his thing for a while longer than I realized. The movie still holds up just fine, but it was funny to see that this Ron Howard movie had a brief cameo from his daughter during the institutionalization scene that made me rewind and rewatch.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum: Directed by Chad Stahelski. With Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne. John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassins’ guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.

IMHO this is the weakest of the three films, with no one set piece that I look back on fondly, and about 3 of them that I look back on and just don’t like. The motorcycles, the dogs with Halle Berry, the 20 minute long glass room fight, none of those made me feel the same way the sewer fight or mirror room fights did in the second one. I honestly struggle to separate out the first two films because I’ve watched them back to back so many times that they’ve blurred into one movie, but this third one stands alone in being just ok in a series where everything else has been damn near perfect.

There’s a fourth one coming out soon enough, we’ll see if they turn it around!

This is a much different adaptation than the Marvel Comics version that came out a long while before this one. This has more violence, more sexual content, and more post apocalyptic feel to it than the more hopeful and sanitized Marvel version. It’s not necessarily done for the better, as the plot gets buried under the weight of trying to be edgy, but it works for the most part. I picked up all but the final issue from a dollar bin, so I’m not entire sure how the entire series ends, but I’m comfortable with saying it likely wraps up in a somewhat ok way with lots of dangling threads.
