“Spaceman” Review

Spaceman: Directed by Johan Renck. With Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Paul Dano, Kunal Nayyar. Half a year into his solo mission on the edge of the solar system, an astronaut concerned with the state of his life back on Earth is helped by an ancient creature he discovers in the bowels of his ship.

Every now and then actors that are known for one genre step out of that genre and do something more series and/or different than what everyone knows them for. Sandler does this pretty frequently, he’s known for being a hilarious comedian with a huge following, but when he decides to get series he goes all in with movies like Uncut Gems, Punch Drunk Love, or Reign Over Me. “Spaceman” isn’t as heavy as those other films, but it comes dang close to it but does it in a way that could be equal parts horror or comedy science fiction, but instead reaches a point of self reflection that many films never attempt. It works for the most part, I have some minor quibbles about some of the story elements, but the end product is a great thought experiment on an ironically human level.

The Devolution’s invasion of Earth will be thwarted by coups and conspiracy unless Avigail can unite her extraterrestrial brethren. Comics’ next sci-fi epic beg

IDW sent this to me (and a whole pile of other books!) to review and I picked this one because of the setup, but while it mentions a whole bunch of aliens and politics, it’s ultimately a hyper violent hack and slash with a thin veneer of science fiction to justify the extreme violence. I normally have no real problem with this type of stuff (Brzrkr has been a blast to read) but for some reason I just couldn’t buy into the idea of aliens that look exactly like humans that are all too concerned about hybrids that they unwittingly created and the interactions among all the different factions within the alien government (who’s entirely off the page in this series).

There’s a lot to like here though with great art and the possibility that the story will evolve into something more, but I think I’ll be skipping further issues.
