    LEGO Builder’s Journey

LEGO Builder’s Journey: A free-form geometric puzzle game set in the world of LEGO.

This is hands down one of the worst LEGO games i’ve ever tried to play. Nothing makes sense on it from the controls to what they’re even trying to make you do, it’s a complete mess of nothingness that doesn’t make any sense at all. Did I not understand something about the game? Who knows?! There’s no tutorial, no intro, and nothing that makes me think this game is anything more than a shameless cash grab.

skip if you can resist, give up after about an hour of aimlessly doing nothing with the controls.

    Don’t Open Till Christmas

Don’t Open Till Christmas: Directed by Edmund Purdom. With Edmund Purdom, Alan Lake, Belinda Mayne, Mark Jones. Somebody with very little Christmas spirit is killing anyone in a Santa suit one London holiday season, and Scotland Yard has to stop him before he makes his exploits an annual tradition.

Low budget and creepy, but there’s a bit of charm in the movie that I love.

    Mallrats

Mallrats: Directed by Kevin Smith. With Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani. Both dumped by their girlfriends, two best friends seek refuge in the local mall.

I finally own this (again) on disk, but this time it’s a Blu-ray and it came with all sorts of cool stuff, like the extended version of the film. The extended version isn’t better than the theatrical version, in fact I’d say it’s only barely the same movie as the version we all know and love. There’s an extra 30 minutes of set up before they even get to the dang mall!

The extra features are all pretty darn cool and I think this movie has the longest Stan Lee ‘cameo’ that I’ve ever seen.

Hubble Helps Discover a New Type of Planet Largely Composed of Water

Researchers have found evidence for the existence of a new type of planet they have called a “water world,” where water makes up a large fraction of the entire planet. These worlds, discovered in a planetary system 218 light-years away, are unlike any planets in our Solar System.

    Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water: Directed by James Cameron. With Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang. Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home.

I have seen this movie and my initial reactions are that it’s definitely a movie, it’s definitely set in the same universe that the first movie was in, I’m pretty sure these are mostly the same actors, but it doesn’t quite capture the things that made the first movie work. They’re still using the same type of technology that the first movie had, so it’s still an exceptionally pretty film, but the story this time around was less than what I was hoping for, with a myopic focus on a single family while a whole planet’s worth of stuff is going on in the background.

On the technology side, they tried to do some high frame rate stuff that looked like complete garbage at my local AMC. I’m not sure if our equipment wasn’t able to keep up with the demands of the movie, but I saw the frame rate get down to the teens at a few points, then the video would go into the high 100’s trying to catch up with the audio track. The experience reminded me of when I tried to set up a media center PC but it wasn’t really up to the task. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the 4k/hdr release is going to eventually look like, because I sadly think that’s going to be a better experience than what I got in the theaters.
