This was a fun game, and would serve as an excellent introduction to sim RTS games like starcraft or it’s kin. One thing to note though, this was for the 360 and I played it on my xbox one, using it’s backwards comparability and didn’t notice too much of a difference in game play. Safe for kids as there is literally NO violence or sexuality in it, just some good avatar-based fun.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of ‘art house’ in Craven’s top ten list, since his career was kick started by remaking Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring as a bloody ‘revenge’ movie.

Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile review
The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year’s resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve. The highly anticipated sequel to the bestselling underground cult classic, Day by Day Armageddon begins where the first novel left off.

Book 2 in the enjoyable Day by Day zombie survival series, and it picks up as if it’s part of the first story, which I’m pleased with, no time jumps to some future period where it’s been safe and secure for months on end. Nope, one book ends with him walking down a road, the next book picks right up with him walking down that same road just a few minutes later. In this installment, we find that our hero is no good behind the stick of a helicopter, zombies are everywhere and there’s a possibility that the military still has big wig idiots in charge of some sizable weapons. Lots of on the nose bits here, but just as soon as I start to get bored with the mundane, we’re whisked away to a different setting that holds my attention completely. There’s a bit with a tank and a bridge…whew.
Day by Day Armageddon review
Sporadic news reports indicate chaos and violence spreading through U.S. cities. An unknown evil is sweeping the planet. The dead are rising to claim the Earth as the new dominant species in the food chain. This is the handwritten journal depicting one man’s struggle for survival. Trapped in the midst of global disaster, he must make decisions; choices that ultimately mean life, or the eternal curse to walk as one of them. Enter if you will into his world. The world of the undead.

A decent start to a zombie survival series, it’s presented as a journal though, so there’s a fair bit of jumping between points of view that can be jarring at times. That being said, it was a fun read and I was happy to learn there’s another couple books in the series. What sets this one apart from the other zombie books? Not a whole lot, the protagonist is a pilot in the military who abandons his post to hole up in his home when the end of the world start happening and somehow stumbles his way into some situations that seem somewhat unlikely, but who am I to judge what might happen after the dead rise up against us. . .

Constitution: Book 1 of the Legacy Fleet Trilogy review
Tags:Battlestar Galactica, Book Reviews, Books
The year is 2650 75 years ago, an alien fleet attacked Earth. Without warning. Without mercy. We were not prepared. Hundreds of millions perished. Dozens of cities burned. We nearly lost everything. Then, the aliens abruptly left. We rebuilt. We armed ourselves. We swore: never again. But the aliens never came back. Until now. With overwhelming force the aliens have returned, striking deep into our territory, sending Earth into a panic. Our new technology is useless. Our new ships burn like straw. All our careful preparations are wasted. Now, only one man, one crew, and the oldest starship in the fleet stand between the Earth and certain destruction: ISS CONSTITUTION
Source: Amazon.com
Stop me if you’d this one before: Humanity has survived an attack from robots aliens, we haven’t heard from them in a while, but then they return and only a rag tag group on a broken down soon to retire ship can save the species!
I do poke fun, but this is like the 5th book that I’ve read in a while that has this set up, I imagine it’s one that’s been around far longer than BSG, but not all of the implementations of the trope are as well done as Constitution. There’s a couple obvious bread crumbs left for the next two books, but I’m satisfied with this one as a stand alone book. There’s action, there’s adventure, there’s over the top political overtones that slap you in the face to be very very obvious!
TV Shananigans
I’ve had this Mitsubishi WD-65735 65-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV for several years (six? I think six, yes) and it’s always been a little janky, with some overscan issues and taking several seconds to change from input to input or channel to channel. It’s always been just good enough to not replace, always been a great TV, so the minor issues that it’s had haven’t really weighted on me. That being said, it was time to replace my $75 wal-mart sorta surround sound system with something that was actually dolby certified and could handle all the latest gizmos and formats that are floating around my living room (usb music, banana connectors, HMDI 4k, 3d, etc etc) I eventually settled on a Sony STR-DH740 7.2 Channel 4K AV Receiver:
This is a very very good receiver. It pushes the speakers I had previously with gusto and the hook up was as simple as plugging in the newly installed banana clip speaker wires and powering it all up. Excellent purchase and I was very happy with the results. For a while. I had it set up for about a week, and started to notice that after it was turned off it would make random clicking noises, the same exact type of noise it makes when it turns on or off, nothing too loud or exciting, but enough to wake you up if you’re trying to nap off a hangover on the couch. Around this time though, the wife and I started painting the living room from a nasty renters beige to a nice home-owners green, so it was moved to the middle of the room and leave it unplugged for a while. After we moved everything back to where it was going to live and we were sitting around the clicking was getting on my nerves, so I figured I’d go all out and try to figure out what the issues was.
A brief amount of google-fu led me no where, other than people talking about blown capacitors or fuses, and I was pretty sure that there wasn’t anything actually broken on it as it was performing very well. Remember I mentioned that my TV had some issues? Apparently it has something known as “HDMI CEC“, which allows the TV to control HDMI devices and HDMI devices to control the TV. Apparently some manufacturers didn’t use the industry spec though and the interaction between my Mitsubishi TV and my Sony Receiver was causing the receiver to turn on, then immediately turn back off every 30-90 seconds. The kicker was that turning this off on just the TV wasn’t enough, I had to turn it off on the receiver as well, and now my living room is click free.
The Divergent Series: Insurgent review
Tris and Four race to unlock the truth about the past in this star-powered, action-packed second adventure from the DIVERGENT series.
Source: Amazon Instant Video
Man am I happy I waited for this to be out of the theaters, I would have been disappointed to have paid money to watch this completely uninteresting and formulaic film that had nary a moment of real dramatic tension. Apparently the world is in chaos and teeters on the edge of oblivion, but it’s mostly about knowing glances, spoken love and hot people standing around looking hot with big future guns that they only shoot when absolutely necessary and usually with no blood. Normally having hot people in a film can somewhat distract (and Shailene Woodley is smoking hot in Insurgent) but it wasn’t enough to capture my attention. Maybe I need more teen angst in my life to really grok this type of film, but really, my adult angst is enough.
These are the droids I’m looking for.

The Ember War review
A dire warning. An impending alien invasion. Only one chance for survival.
In the near future, an alien probe arrives on Earth with a pivotal mission—determine if humanity has what it takes to survive the impending invasion by a merciless armada.
The probe discovers Marc Ibarra, a young inventor, who holds the key to a daring gambit that could save a fraction of Earth’s population. Humanity’s only chance lies with Ibarra’s ability to keep a terrible secret and engineer the planet down the narrow path to survival.
Earth will need a fleet. One with a hidden purpose. One strong enough to fight a battle against annihilation.
The Ember War is the first installment in an epic military sci-fi series. If you like A Hymn Before Battle by John Ringo and The Last Starship by Vaughn Heppner, then you’ll love this explosive adventure with constant thrills and high stakes from cover to cover.
I’ve had a run of “first installments in epic series” lately, I need to stop doing this, because they’re all starting to run together, I had completely forgotten what The Ember War was about just a day after I finished it. Had to go back and read some of it again to refresh myself, then promptly follow the author on Amazon, cause this was a damn good ‘first installment’. Fast paced with a touch of familiarity from various other science fiction tropes and now I’m a big fan. It’s like he mixed Contact, Mass Effect, Halo, and threw in a dash of The Lost Fleet for good measure. The only thing that I’m disappointed in is that this book came out less than a month ago, so it’s going to be a while before we see another entry in the series.
Infamous game review
- Explore an exciting open-world environment in which you have been granted extraordinary powers
- Learn to master incredible electrical-based powers and try to grasp the responsibilities that come with them
- Wield your powers to take down powerful, iconic villains
- Decide how best to use your powers, and watch as citizens and the city react and evolve based on your actions
I’m very happy I was able to play Infamous before I sold off my ps3, as it’s much more in line with the types of games that I enjoy, along with game mechanics that were intuitive and smooth. The collection that’s linked above is actually both the first and second game, all for only $20, I didn’t get to try out the second one though, I’m due to sell off the PS3 sometime this week. . . that being said, if you want to see a real pretty PS3 game with a storyline that isn’t utter crap or too confusing, Infamous is the place to start.
Taken 3 review
Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his “particular set of skills,” to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter.
Source: Amazon.com
This is the third entry in a pretty thinly scripted series, this time taking the hip “Tak3n” name and stretching plausibility to the extreme. I’m a big fan of Liam Neeson, but him playing a Jason Borne style action hero is difficult to grasp, as he’s over 60 years old. The stunts and action make it clear that either it’s not him doing the stunts or it’s him doing them in 5-10 second intervals. One scene that really got painful to watch was sadly the first real action scene where his character’s been framed and he’s on the run from the cops. The scene’s only about 5 minutes long from the point that the action starts to the point that the action ends, and I swear to god I’m being honest here: I lost count around the 250’s cut nearly every second or every two seconds, incredibly jarring and difficult to keep track of what’s happening to who and when. Just kind gloss over your eyes and hope that they explain it all after the dust settles.

Reddit is in full meltdown
The title is incorrect actually, as it seems like only 1-2% of reddit is still dark. This is a clear indication of what happens to a popular site when the owners don’t take heed to the user’s concerns, something that I’ve struggled with on my own sites, and I’m only a single guy working on a site, and not a group of people with corporate overlords like Reddit. My day job is in one of those massive corporations, so I appreciate how difficult it can get consensus on new features and how to implement them, and can really appreciate how slow that wheel of progress can turn. On the flip side, running MCS has shown me how quickly people can blow the fuck up when a singular person like me changes something major on the site (drop down comments, ratings, mcs+, et al) so I think I’m able to see both sides of this argument, and I’m also seeing additional motivation to get some more work done on this site to make things….better.
- First step of course is to get the rest of these damn posts tagged. considering I started with about 30,000 posts to tag, I’m feeling pretty good to be approaching 3,000 today.
- Next step is to fix the image submission and posting on mcs+. I’ve always wanted the front page to be my own posts with posts that I’ve enjoyed from other people, the struggle has always been with how appropriate the content is and how impossible/difficult it is to get it from the sfw site to the NSFW site if someone happened to post something that had a vague hint of a female nipple (male nipples are just fine though). We had the forums for a fair long while but the software that I was using was less than perfect and was letting all sorts of spam and virus links onto the site, and since it was being under utilized it was taken down. I still feel there’s a slight need for that though, so that’s going to be part of the MCS+ side of things.
- Revenue for MCS is a difficult thing to get my head around. Google Adsense has banned us for a while, and in the nearly 10 years the site has been up, they were the only ones that actually paid enough to make it work the time and effort, along with the reliability of not having ads with autoplay videos or viruses. I’ve been emboldened by sites like Metafilter or news sites that have people pay for access or the ability to comment. Back when I first introduced MCS+ it was $25 for a lifetime membership, then I kinda dropped that after 5-6 months of no purchases. I’m not sure how it’s really going to look in the future, but that’s something that I feel strongly about: removing all ads and letting the community support the site, either through something like Patreon or purchasing monthly subscriptions for content / posting abilities, somewhere in the realms of 1-2 dollars a month at most.

Inhuman Book 5 review
BOOK DESCRIPTION: Inhuman is Book 5 in the best-selling, smash hit phenomenon, Post-Human series. In this 400-plus pages, 109k word epic story (twice as long as any other individual book in the series for the same low $2.99 price-point) readers will get to rejoin all of the characters they fell in love with along the way in the previous 4 books. Inhuman not only ties the first four books together, it also introduces a new villain, one that has been lurking in the background throughout, and that will trump any villain in the history of literature, film, or comics. V-SINN is its name, and, this time, it may just be too much for the post-humans to handle. Inhuman is to the Post-Human series as The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars–the middle act when revelations emerge, old sins come back to haunt, and the journey of the heroes that readers have fallen in love with deepens, darkens, and entertains to a whole new level. Post-Human fans will be not be disappointed with this epic middle act! Enjoy!
Source: Amazon.com
Ah, well. Here again.
Books 1-4 wrapped up the story pretty well, then I guess they got some traction, so here we are at book 5, which is a pretty good entry in the Post Human series, but not a conclusive story line at all. As the synopsis above says, this is just a middle act book, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a few more dozen of these.
Don’t take that as a complaint though, I think I’ll end up reading every single one of them as they come out, lol. The books are good and have a nice flair to them that’s missing in other post-singularity stories with some flourishes that take their logical course with interesting limits on the most power beings in the universe.

Maggie review
Watch Now While It’s in Theaters. When a deadly zombie virus sweeps the nation, a father will stop at nothing to save his infected daughter in this post-apocalyptic thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin.
Source: Maggie
While you can tell there’s a low budget at play here, the acting and back story really make up for it, I really enjoyed what they had to present here, which is more of a look at what a community will do in light of rules that are put in place in an unbelievable situation. Yeah, it makes sense to have a quarantine, but what if it’s your daughter?
Love And Mercy
This is a wonderful movie with two amazing performances, (something of a quandary for The Academy when the Oscars come round again I imagine) but one of the most interesting aspects of it is the work by Atticus Ross and Eugene Gearty (sound department). Wilson started having auditory hallucinations in the early sixties and the film very cleverly creates his internal sound track. Ross supplies an astonishing melange of Wilson’s work. And Paul Dano does his own singing! He sounds EXACTLY like Wilson, a rare case of ‘channeling’ while the subject is still alive.
One of the greatest love songs ever written.

PROTOTYPE game review
You are the PROTOTYPE, Alex Mercer, hiding in human form. You step out onto the streets of New York with no memory, but limitless power. As a terrifying viral epidemic sweeps across Manhattan, top-secret Black Watch Special Forces move in, transforming it into a war zone. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.
Source: Amazon.com
This was a hard one to get through, for multiple reasons. I started it back in August of 2014, which was right around when my mother was getting sick, so while I was looking for distractions, I wasn’t finding the right kind of pull from PROTOTYPE that I needed at the time. The story is a confusing mess that relies on you collecting bits of it from the memories of passing by civilians or soldiers, but ultimate the story was actually pretty light, mostly consisting of someone doing evil things just because they could.
The battles were another thing that were somewhat frustrating as well, as I found myself frequently having to play the game in a way that completely took me out of the game itself. The prime example of this was the final battle where I had to get the boss caught up in the environment in order to properly heal myself and fight back.
It was enjoyable, but it took me far longer than the 11 hours that’s mentioned on how long it takes me beat, about 27 hours of game time and about 10 months of calendar time.

Dashcam – Jeep Carjacked, Crashes (911 Audio Included)
Wichita, KS – This is amazing dash cam footage of a Jeep being carjacked from an unidentified man by gunpoint. Little did they know that the man had a dash cam and it catches the whole thing from start to when the thief loses control and crashes into a light pole at over 46 mph!
I have a dashcam in my car, it’s pretty sweet, the best I’ve gotten is a girl flashing someone else way off in the distance.
Chappie review
In the near future, crime is monitored by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful and destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.
Source : Amazon.com
I was perfectly happy to let this one go unwatched, the director’s last two films felt like they were missing something essential and were heavy handed in their social commentary. Also, who need yet another movie about robots (or AI) that come to life and take part in shenanigans? It was until a recent reddit thread talking about the film that I found out what it’s really about: Die Antwoord find s arobot and Hugh Jackman wears mom shorts. Throw in some way over the top acting by Jackman and some excellent cgi / bodysuit work for the Chappie character, all set to a Die Antwoord set selection, and you get a pretty good result. Also, someone obviously had a heart to heart with Neill Blomkamp, because there were several opportunity for “Chappie” to go off the same rails that his previous film have, but luckily he was smart enough to guide the film to a more reasonable path.

HE’S BACK!
Penny Dreadful: Season 2
It’s the return of the Eva Green Intensity Hour! But so far the most important plot development thus far is pink guy lined Victor Frankenstein’s erotic/romantic interest in the companion he’s created for The Creature aka John Clare. So far, Vicky Boy’s been implanting false memories into her about their past lives as cousins (very Rachel in Blade Runner), changed her accent, cut of her hair and dyed it blonde. (to avoid recognition he says, but more likely to allow La Piper freedom from a ginger wig and a Northern Irish accent) WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Well, for one thing, in Season 1, the adorable Mr Proteus was starting to get his memory back before he was so rudely torn asunder by Rory Kinnear (badly miscast in my opinion). Secondly, there’s the sticky problem of her having a werewolf boyfriend in her previous incarnation. This could get messy…

Warm Suicide
A beautiful woman is standing on a bridge, looking over the side and thinking about jumping off.
A homeless man walks up to her.
She sees the man coming and says, “Go away! There’s nothing you can say to change my mind!”
He says, “Well, if you’re going to kill yourself anyway, why don’t we have sex? At least I’ll enjoy it.”
“Absolutely not! You’re disgusting!”, she replies. The man turns and starts walking away.
“Is that all you’re going to say? You’re not going to try to convince me that life is worth living? Where are you going?”
“I have to make it down to the bottom. If I hurry, you’ll still be warm!”, he says.
