Beyond the Poseidon Adventure

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure: Directed by Irwin Allen. With Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, Peter Boyle. An extension of the previous film, wherein a cache of adventurers return to the overturned ship to seek several fortunes.

It’s a rare sequel that matches or exceeds the preceeding movie, but Beyond The Poseidon Adventure does this by completely changing the genre and featuring the top level talents of Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, and Slim Pickens. The movie picks up just seconds after the first film finishes with Caine as the captain of an unbelievably small boat finding the upside down Poseidon and decides to take a couple friends into the ship to raid the on board bank. As they approach the ship, Telly Savalas and a small crew show up proclaiming they just want to help, but they’re clearly up to no good.

I don’t have a source on this, but I think they reused some of the same sets from the original film. They definitely used some of the same footage to show off the disaster areas, but only one or two of them were overly obvious. The ending is much more explosive than I was expecting, but it was definitely definitive.
