Sam Webb on Continuing Mission

Continuing Mission recently featured Sam Webb:
The folks at Modiphius are working hard to produce a top-quality game. But who are the exact people who make it happen?
I was able to corner Sam Webb, Star Trek Line Manager, in his geek cave (as seen in photo) to find out what makes him tick! Sam started tabletop gaming as a teenager, starting with Warhammer 40k and moving onto Dungeons and Dragons in his last year at Drama School, where he trained to be a theatre director.

Amy Ratcliffe on SyFy Wire

SyFy Wire recently featured Amy Ratcliffe:
Ratcliffe is a stage host at Star Wars Celebration, has co-hosted popular Star Wars podcasts (currently Lattes With Leia, formerly Full of Sith), written numerous articles for Star Wars Insider, and writes for the official Star Warswebsite. Currently, she’s working as the managing editor for Nerdist and still writes about Star Wars. When it was announced that she would be authoring a new Star Wars book called Women of the Galaxy, I don’t think anyone was surprised. She’s a perfect fit.
Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy takes a look at 75 different characters from a galaxy far, far away. Each one is written about by Ratcliffe and new art has been commissioned by a team of 18 female and non-binary artists for each one.

As impressed as I was with the first film, the second one is better in nearly every way. There’s a great look into the boiler room Fred worked at, something only vaguely hinted at in the first movie, much more use of fire as one of Freddy’s tools, explosive birds, a father that refuses to hire help to fix the a/c in the Hellhouse, A grade gore (specifically the coach’s back in the shower, youch!), a fantastic pool party, and then wrapped up with an impressively steady long shot of one of the main characters running around the previously mentioned boiler room. It took me a couple rewinds to even figure out how they made the shot, but even knowing how it was done doesn’t lessen how impressed I was with the lighting, stability and planning that had to go into those 30-45 seconds of screen time.

There’s a double page spread right at the start of the series that blew me away, the rest of the book is just as good. For people that know about Frank and DD’s history there’s a bit of humor there, but it all ends with Frank using knives instead of guns due to DD’s protests. That goes about as well as you’d expect.
-
Continuing it’s fun run, in this issue there’s a couple in bed, a sulking god/demon thing (moa?), and a chase scene that ends with a bunch of dead demon infused cops.
-
Is this some kind of ongoing series or something?
-
With this running at the same time as the Castle storyline in Star Wars: Vader, I’m confusing myself on what exactly is happening in which book.
-
Diamond neglected to send this to my comic shop.
-
I had forgotten that Kraven was borderline insane when he first came around, the following books and cartoons never really played up how absolutely bonkers he was. This is a great What If story that really takes things to the extreme.
-
In comparison to the above Kraven storyline, this one is downright tame, though I love the artwork here much more.

Curse Words TPBs 1 & 2
Image Comics has this great program named “Image Firsts” in which they reprint first issues of books that are about to go to TPB or are doing well enough that they think they can grab a larger audience by practically giving away the first issue. It’s a clever idea that Marvel is also doing with their “True Believer” books, but I’ve actually not found anything that was of interest to me yet from all the Marvel $1 comics, yet with the Image ones, I think I’m up to 5 or 6 different series that I would have never tried that I think I’m going to buy collections of.
The first that I’ve bought from is Curse Words, which has a familiar story of someone being sent somewhere to destroy a place or person, only to fall in love with said place/person and defending it against the powers that sent them there in the first place. What makes this particular story unique is that there’s a talking koalas named Margaret, there’s a great backstory and the main story moves in a pretty rapid pace, no filler content here! Another reason is that these trades were pretty cheap, just $10 each!

-
I love that cover, sadly the story within is just not up to the same quality. It’s the first part of a new storyline, so maybe it’ll pick up.
-
Absolutely fantastic book on multiple levels, it’s a hard science fiction story that seems to be a seriou coping mechanism for the author, and as with all work done from an emotional center, it shows.
-
Ethical dilemmas abound with some gratuitous violence sprinkled about.
-
Dark and muddy art work with a story that’s still ok. Not great, but ok.
-
As with the other movie adaptations, the only way this is going to make sense is if you’ve seen the movie AND seen the deleted scenes.
-
Only two stories in this edition (previous had 3), both are silly halloween type shlock that I love to read.
-
Dr. Doom goes good, but still has trouble asking for help from others!
-
Spidey gets married, but then gets in trouble!
Notable mentions:
- Captain Canuck First Summer Special – Printed the same month that I was born, this is a hilariously poorly printed and constructed book, there’s no set uniform for the Captain, the stories are jumpy, and there’s likely not a single page that was error free. I loved this look into how poorly a book can be published and how quality control for both the character’s designs and print production go hand in hand in making a good comic book experience.
- X-O Manowar #19 75th issue anniversary, which was shipped late by Diamond, a great story about picking up the pieces from the rushed and poorly executed “harbinger 2” mini series. All the post-war stuff has been so much better than the actual mini series, I do wonder if that was intentional somewhat. Also, the numbering shenanigans reminds me that it’s not just the big two that have problems with counting.

“Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.”
“Aladdin” stars Will Smith as the larger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud as the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards. The film is produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich with Marc Platt and Kevin De La Noy serving as executive producers. Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and two new songs written by Menken and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The film, which was shot on practical stages in London and on location amidst the stunning desert vistas of Jordan, has a talented creative team helping to bring Agrabah to life, including: director of photography Alan Stewart, production designer Gemma Jackson and costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Here’s the latest from my city:
Update as of 6:00pm Thursday
- No reported serious injuries.
- Began the day with more the 90% without power.
- Thousands of trees are down and have caused widespread damage and blocked roads
- Road clearing has been a priority focus today. All major roads are now passable. Road clearing efforts are now focused on neighborhoods.
- 61% of traffic signals are active and crews continue to deploy backup generators for signals without power. Expect 100% coverage by Friday morning.
- Citizens are still encouraged to stay off of the road tonight.
- 28 mutual utilities are in Tallahassee providing assistance.
- Repairs to transmission, substation and distribution circuits are occurring simultaneously.
- Hopkins Unit 2 is being restarted to support the new load once circuits are energized.
- Repairs to the 230kv transmission tie to Southern Company have been completed. Awaiting clearance to close the interconnection from Southern Company. Estimated clearance at 6pm.
- Coordination with nursing homes and assisted living facilities continues.
- Facilitated back-up generation for the Tapestry Senior Living on Lakeshore Dr.
- Expect significant customer restoration tonight as repairs are completed.
- No physical damage has been found at Purdom Power Plant. PP8 is ready to return to service.
- TPD continues to operate with enhanced staffing providing support. No public safety issues to report.
- Business are quickly reopening. Target, Walmart, Publix, numerous restaurants, Home Depot, Walgreens, Costco, etc.
I’ve survived just fine, several of my neighbors have had trees come down, but it seems like no one has had any serious damage to their property, just 100 year old oaks and 200 foot pine trees falling down all over the place. I went out with my beagle yesterday to survey the damage and it looks like there’s at least 3 different power lines that have to be repaired in my neighborhood alone before I’ll have power again. I have no clue what will need to be done outside of my neighborhood, I’m told that there’s several lines still in the road on the main drag.
As you can see, I’m really roughing it out here. I’m going to venture out later today for some more supplies (beer), but for the moment I’m going to enjoy the cool temperatures and strong coffee.

A story within a story to distract from how short the original story was.

Use this issue to show people how long Marvel’s been doing the “what if someone was a lady” thing with their characters.
Venom
Tags:Comic Books, Movie Of The Year 2018, Movie Reviews, Movies, Venom
This wasn’t the venom I knew from the comic books, but some weird combination of The Odd Couple, The Darkness, and Forest Gump. Considering what Sony’s done to the other Spider-man related movies, I’m willing to consider this as a goof movie, just not a great movie, and absolutely mess of an MCU movie. Luckily this isn’t a “proper” MCU movie, but a “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Movies” that will soon include Silver Sable, Black Cat, and more Venom movies. Maybe. Depends on if Tom Hardy really takes to heart some of the criticisms that are heading his way for how weird this movie turned out being.

Three siblings embark on a temple tour and discover the legends behind it are real. They must navigate a series of booby-trapped rooms to lift the temple’s curse and escape with their lives.
Defunctland mentioned this show in one of their episodes, along with the fact that there was a movie made after the wrap of the show. It’s not an award winning movie, but it’s a fun story that I slept through a fair bit of. My wife was dutifully entertained, as she was a fan of the original show when it was on air. One thing that interested me for the 20 or 30 minutes I was awake for, but the eldest of the three kids is played by Isabela Moner, who later went to to star in Transformers: Last Knight.

No dreams, but a great “previously on” section caught me up on the character, I havent’ read anything of her before, other than the Faith and the Future Force mini series which didn’t really have much Faith back story.
-
How is this story any different than the one that’s playing out in the current issues of Ninja-K?

Stan & Ollie
Tags:Movie Posters, Movie Trailers, Movies
The true story of Hollywood’s greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy, is brought to the big screen for the first time. Starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the legendary movie icons, Stan & Ollie is the heart-warming story of what would become the pair’s triumphant farewell tour.
With their golden era long behind them, the pair embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) – a formidable double act in their own right – the pair’s love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public.

Half the problems in this movie wouldn’t have been problems if Peter Panning wasn’t such a bad parent. Honestly, the first quarter of the movie is a lesson in how poorly he was raising his kids! I mean, sure the problems were all resolved with imagination, flying, and murder, but my point stands.
Damage Control 1989 I
Tags:Book Reviews, Comic Books
My recent adventure at Megacon 2018 netted a few “new to me” comic books, the first mini series for Damage Control was the first purchase. It’s written by Dwayne McDuffie, which was a surprise to me, I didn’t know he was doing work this far back in 1989, though I guess it makes sense, he would have been in his late 20’s then. As always with McDuffie, the stories are fun to read and of the four issues, two of them are related to bigger things going on in the Marvel Universe, so while there’s meta story through the four issues, they’re all still a blast.

Found all four issues for $1 each in my LCS’s dollar bin, perfect condition! The story was pretty fun, but at times pretty confusing if you didn’t know what Doom was ultimately going to be up to here.
IIRC, this was back when the whole “Marvel Knights” thing was just taking off in an attempt to save Marvel Comics. Pretty sure it helped, I know that I enjoyed a fair number of the stories that were told in the MK books.
Tilting at Windmills #270 Pondering Whether to Close A Comic Shop
A periodical-based comics shop in SF is in jeopardy of closing.
Absolutely fantastic opinion piece about the future of the comic books industry. Specifically he mentions Spider-Geddon which looks like it could be a really cool miniseries, but when I was doing my Previews order I couldn’t make heads or tails of how many issues were going to be involved and what exactly I would be getting into or what I needed to read to even know what was going on. Much like Brian, I have no faith that Marvel Comics will have a series with a distinct start, middle, and end, and don’t want to get roped into a mini series with 8 different tie in series and 30 different variant covers, none of which actually look very good.

Tries to be too smart for it’s own capabilities, starts with a great premise of weird things going on into orbit and makes a massive and unexpected hard turn into robots and post humanist concepts that are great in a written form but are pretty boring to watch on the screen.

I’m still surprised that I’m enjoying a Roman Legion story this much.
-
A great ending to a very long running series. Yet another flower plucked well before it’s time and who do we have to blame for that? Disney.
-
Confusing to see three or four different people being called Snake-Eyes
-
A neat little wrap up of her adventure in Canada, I think I’m ready for some character growth with Hit-Girl, she’s stuck in a one note rut of hero worshipping her father and not having time for the simpler things in life.
-
This story is getting bonkers, but not in a good way. Lady has time to go to college, raise her kids, sleep, run a criminal empire, and isn’t ready to pull her own eyeballs out from her head? Additionally, she’s taking “just” $800 a week from her criminal activities and saying it’s a “soldier’s pay”? I don’t know much about military pay, but having $3200 a month take home sounds great, especially if it’s just side revenue to her main job.
-
Oh ffs, are they really going to make fundamental changes to Captain Marvel’s origin story in the comics months before the Captain Marvel movie comes out?
-
LCS did not have a copy of this pulled for me.
-
After 6 issues of wondering if I was ever going to be really interested in this character, here’s the issue that made the wait worth it. An amazing dawn of time story of how the first spirit was bound to man. Great story and art, but there’s six months of build up that you have to get through to really understand what’s going on.
-
Continuing one of the best storylines that Marvel OR LucasBooks has done in a while.
-
A mediocre mini series comes to a mediocre ending. I’m still shocked that no one objected to naming a robot “L3-37” like some kind of mid 2000’s haxxor kid.
-
Iron fist works much better on the page than he does on the screen, and this book is evidence of that.
-
The punisher gets reinvented! An entertaining story with Frank heading to prision, then escaping from prison with a long trail of dead bodies behind him.
-
A merc with a heart of gold, hired to kill the evil and murderous Spider-man, who was recently framed for a murder, then framed again for another one in this issue.
There were four books that I pulled from the Free or $1 bins:
- Captain Canuck Year One fcbd
Fantastic story that I’m going to start following up on in trade. - Destroyer
Weak art, but fantastic setting and an interesting story. This was a character I didn’t know of before finding him in the dollar bin, apparently he’s Solar, but…angrier? - Judge Dredd: Legends of the Law
Tourists from “Cit Brit” visiting Mega City One with predictably entertaining outcomes. - batman li’l gotham special edition
I love the art and story, but I’m not sure I’d be able to deal with an entire series like this. - Batman: White Knight Batman Day
I missed this story line completely when it came through originally, based on this free issue though, I’ll be picking up the TPB.
Rebel Galaxy
Tags:Game Of The Year 2018, Game Reviews, Gaming
Rebel Galaxy is a swashbuckling space adventure, with action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and “negotiation” with the outlandish denizens at the edge of the known universe.
Released nearly 3 years ago to the day that I started playing it, I swear it was a coincidence, or at least I didn’t know why I picked it up. I seent it on humble bundle or chrono.gg for obscenely cheap, thought maybe I would try it out, but maybe I should check my Steam library before I spent $3 on it.
Low and behold, I’ve owned this since April 2017, it’s nice to get a game out of my unplayed queue after only a year and a half. I really wish I had started this back when I first bought it, I have some complaints about how shallow the gameplay is, but I honestly think that even that shallow game play is a positive with my current game playing style. All of the missions are resolvable within 20-30 minutes, the game automatically saves your progress when you quit out, and you can completely pause the game when you’re doing laundry.
The soundtrack is great the first 200 times I heard the twangy battle music, but after that….well I can see why they included a custom music direction option, so you can insert your own music into the game. Due to a severe case of apathetic laziness I did not partake in this feature, but if it annoys you, there it is.

Oh no! Judgmental Watchers have seized our heroes and are judging them!
-
This story came out of no where with no lead in and references stuff that didn’t happen in the last 5 issues. Mind you, I only started this series back up with issues 251, but they mention “snake-eye’s current status” maybe suggesting that he’s dead? but he was just in two issues ago. Muddled and confusing I’m regretting picking this series back up if this is the way they’re treating their stories.
-
Is this series canceled after this issue? It has a weird charm that was starting to grow on me.
-
A great followup to the lackluster Harbinger Wars 2 mini series, I still feel like Ninja-K is a concept that shouldn’t work as well as it continually does.
-
Boring A story, Boring B story.
-
The Star Wars books continue to be the best content that Marvel is putting out, this is an amazing look into how the architecture of Vader’s castle came about. Yes, seriously, this issue was all about architecture. and ghosts.
-
They fit about 100 pages of content into 30 pages, so this issue (and this entire mini series) felt rushed and only really lands if you’ve seen the movie. The art was absolutely fantastic though, great lines and great coloring throughout.
-
I did not read this story when it was first printed, but I think I may pick up this collection. Maybe.
-
As hopeless and sad as I thought the Jessica Jones TV series was, this series was even more hopeless and sad. It’s only redeeming

Tags:Colleen Wing, Iron Fist, Television, Television Reviews
A much better experience than the first season, still not enough to really capture my attention until the last two episodes when some pretty insane stuff starts to happen. Alice Eve was absolutely perfect as Typhoid Mary, and the combination of Jessica Henwick (Wing) and Simone Missick (Knight) makes for some tantalizing possibilities. I never really read the comics, so there’s a lot that gets past me, but I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with the threads they’ve left danging at the end of season two.
Level 99 Alexander Brandon Aven Colony
Tags:Gaming, Level With Emily Reese, Music
Alexander Brandon has been making music for games for quite some time, like back to the days of Unreal and Unreal Tournament.
His new project is Aven Colony, a city-building strategy game where you build a colony on an alien planet. The music changes and develops as you build your colony successfully, slowly adding more and more acoustic elements after beginning with more synth and electronic sounds.
Alex is also a voice actor (he’s Amaund Motierre in Skyrim, the fella who asks you to assassinate the Emperor), so we chat about how he got into that part of the games industry.

Last issue was meh, this issue….whew lad. There’s a lot more explained about The Relay and for the most part, it’s all damn interesting.

There’s a high level of polish in this current storyline that’s really appealing to me, this is legit one of the best books Marvel is putting out.

Completely unrelated to the main story that’s going on in the rest of the series and unrelated to any other Star Wars book, it’s a cute tale none the less.
